Richard Mandella showcased his skill in high-stakes racing by winning the inaugural $1 million California Crown Stakes (G1) on September 28 at Santa Anita Park with Subsanador. Facing a trio of Bob Baffert-trained favorites, Subsanador fought his way between National Treasure and Newgate in a dramatic stretch duel. In a photo finish, Subsanador narrowly edged out National Treasure, with Newgate close behind. Despite entering as the third betting choice at 6-1, Subsanador demonstrated grit to claim victory.
Bob Baffert’s entries included Preakness Stakes (G1) winner National Treasure and Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Muth. National Treasure took an early lead, setting fast fractions, with Subsanador positioned close behind under jockey Mike Smith. As the race progressed, Subsanador maneuvered into a tight spot but surged forward on the final turn. A thrilling three-way battle ensued in the stretch, with Subsanador prevailing in 1:48.68 for the 1 1/8-mile distance.
This victory secured Subsanador, owned by Wathnan Racing, an automatic spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Trainer Mandella praised both Subsanador’s determination and Smith’s skillful ride, noting that the horse had shown new resilience under pressure. The win followed Subsanador’s previous triumph in the Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park, where the horse had a much easier trip.
The California Crown, hosted by 1/ST Racing, offered more than just top-tier racing, with entertainment ranging from celebrity chefs to performances by singer Cher. The race marked a significant moment in Santa Anita's fall meet and echoed the festive atmosphere seen at Gulfstream Park’s Pegasus World Cup. Mandella emphasized the importance of such exciting events for the future of horse racing, citing the need to energize the sport and attract broader interest.
