Soul Rush Clinches His Maiden G1 Victory in the Mile Championship

Soul Rush, a six-year-old son of Rulership, secured his long-awaited first G1 triumph in the 41st running of the Mile Championship at Kyoto Racecourse. The Yasutoshi Ikee-trained horse delivered an electrifying performance, storming past rivals to claim a decisive 2-1/2 length victory.

Debuting as a two-year-old in December, Soul Rush had already established himself as a top-class miler, with wins in the 2022 Milers Cup (G2) and the 2023 Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap (G3). Despite falling just short in his first Mile Championship attempt last year, finishing second by a neck, the dark bay returned this year with renewed vigor. Following a third-place finish in the Yasuda Kinen (G1) and a runner-up effort in October's Fuji Stakes (G2), Soul Rush capitalized on his momentum to secure this career-defining win.

Trainer Yasutoshi Ikee celebrated his 23rd JRA-G1 victory, while jockey Taisei Danno earned his second G1 title, his first since the 2023 Takamatsunomiya Kinen aboard First Force.

The Race Unfolded

Soul Rush settled mid-division, tracking the race favorite Brede Weg as the field raced along the backstretch. Jockey Taisei Danno patiently waited for the right moment to unleash his mount’s powerful turn of foot. As the field fanned out wide entering the home straight, Soul Rush accelerated sharply, overtaking Win Marvel near the 100-meter mark to secure a dominant win.

"I feel great. I was initially planning to position him closer to the front, but with such strong contenders, it wasn’t easy," Danno remarked. "He wanted to go earlier, and I let him. His response was phenomenal, and as we crossed the line, the only sound I could hear was the cheering crowd."

Elton Barows and Win Marvel Battle for Second

Seventh favorite Elton Barows, breaking from the widest stall, delivered a strong late charge to snatch second place at the wire. Win Marvel, who had taken command at the 200-meter mark, was edged out by a neck and had to settle for third.

Favorites Struggle

Race favorite Brede Weg found herself shuffled back to mid-pack and, despite a strong finish, was narrowly denied third, finishing fourth. Third choice Charyn, the sole overseas contender, missed the break and was forced to race wide, ultimately finishing a commendable fifth after a strong stretch drive.

Trainer Roger Varian expressed mixed emotions about Charyn’s performance, saying, "The poor start cost him the race. Despite the challenges, he showed his class and finished strong. It’s disappointing, but it’s been a fantastic year for him."

Other Notable Performances

- **6th:** Serifos advanced from near the rear and rallied along the rails but lacked the final kick.
- **7th:** Time to Heaven closed strongly from the back but had too much ground to cover.
- **8th:** Nihonpiro Kyiv, after pressing the pace, faded late.
- **9th:** Fierce Pride stayed on gamely but couldn’t match the leaders’ speed.
- **17th:** Namur, last year’s champion and this year’s second favorite, dropped back sharply in the stretch and finished last, capping off a disappointing campaign.

Final Thoughts

Soul Rush’s victory marked a turning point in his career and further solidified his status as one of Japan’s premier milers. Trainer Ikee and jockey Danno will undoubtedly have high hopes for his future, while fans look forward to what’s next for this newly crowned G1 champion.
