Open Summer Cup Betting Day as Prices are released

Betting has officially opened for the Betway Summer Cup, with early odds offering plenty of intrigue for punters. World Sports Betting and other bookmakers have priced up the markets, reflecting the excitement leading up to South Africa’s marquee racing event.

Summer Cup Favorites

In the feature race, See It Again has firmed as the favorite after securing an advantageous draw of 5. Initially quoted at 3/1, his odds have shortened to 5/2, making him the standout in a competitive field. The only other runner priced in single figures is Frances Ethel, available at 7/1. Her assistant trainer, James Crawford, confirmed her readiness after a strong final gallop this morning.

Challengers such as Main Defender, Royal Victory, and Silver Sanctuary are each priced at 10/1, signaling a wide-open market for bettors seeking value.

Oisin Murphy's African Debut

All eyes will be on champion jockey Oisin Murphy, who is making his African debut. He has a strong book of rides, including:

  • Race 2: the Maiden 1200m race worth R300k: Green Street for Sean Tarry is the early favorite but appears vulnerable, with Tarry suggesting an each-way play following a promising debut second.
  • Race 6 (Gr3 Fillies Mile): Murphy rides Fiery Pegasus for Joe Soma, a booking he made early. The filly is attractively priced at 15/2, although competition is fierce. The favorite, VJ’s Angel, leads the market at 22/10, followed by Fatal Flaw (5/2) and Olivia’s Way (13/2).
  • Race 7 (Gr2 Dingaans): The betting is led by Greatrix and Quid Pro Quo, both quoted at 15/10. Murphy partners Wild At War for Candice Dawson, an outsider at 14/1. Seasoned jockeys Piere Strydom and Kabelo Matsunyane ride the market leaders.

Other Feature Races

Gr3 Merchants: The speedy Lucky Lad has opened as the hot favorite at 13/10, with Pistol Pete next at 28/10. Cat’s Pajamas is the only other contender in single figures, setting up a fascinating sprint clash.

With top-class horses, competitive markets, and international star power, this Summer Cup day promises to be an exhilarating spectacle for racing fans and bettors alike.
