South African-bred speedster Isivunguvungu, now a six-year-old gelding, has been nominated for one of the marquee races on Dubai World Cup night—which, due to the timing of Eid celebrations, will take place a week later than usual, following the festival’s conclusion on March 30/31.
Trainer Graham Motion has entered Isivunguvungu for the Al Quoz Sprint (G1), a high-profile 1200m dash run down Meydan’s straight turf track.
The talented sprinter endured a frustrating run in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, where interference at a crucial stage cost him a better finish despite closing strongly off a hot pace. Though unplaced, he wasn’t far behind the winners.
Since then, he has returned to racing and will continue targeting elite five-furlong turf sprints. However, his specific build-up schedule leading into Dubai World Cup night has yet to be confirmed.
Notably, Isivunguvungu competes under the American flag, meaning he is the sole South African-bred horse nominated for the event.
