The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) has confirmed, with deep sadness, the passing of Michael O'Sullivan.
On behalf of the O’Sullivan family, the IHRB’s directors and staff have extended their heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, partner, friends, colleagues in the weighroom, and the wider racing community during this difficult time.
Dr. Jennifer Pugh, Chief Medical Officer of the IHRB, stated:
“Michael passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning at Cork University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. We are deeply grateful to the multidisciplinary teams who provided him with the highest level of medical care, both on the racecourse and in the hospital.
“At an incredibly difficult time, Michael’s family made the selfless decision to donate his organs, ensuring that his passing will bring hope and a second chance to others in need.
“I had the privilege of knowing Michael throughout his amateur and professional career. His dedication, humility, and kind nature made him a pleasure to be around. His achievements and character were an inspiration to many, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
“Michael’s family would like to express their profound gratitude for the support they have received in recent days. They also wish to acknowledge the kindness of the local community and the racing fraternity. At this time, they ask for privacy.”
IHRB CEO Darragh O'Loughlin added:
“Michael was an exceptionally talented young rider who was always well-liked in the weighroom. His loss will be deeply felt across the racing world. Our thoughts are especially with his parents, Bernadette and William, and his brother Alan, who will feel this loss most profoundly.”
As a mark of respect, today’s (Sunday) fixture at Punchestown, as well as the Point-to-Point meetings at Knockanard, Nenagh, and Tinahely, have been cancelled.
