Would the Champ Come back for Saudi Cup revenge?

Romantic Warrior Could Return for Another Saudi Cup Challenge

Danny Shum Keeps Options Open for Hong Kong Star

Romantic Warrior’s thrilling near-miss in The Saudi Cup last weekend may not be his final appearance in Riyadh, as trainer Danny Shum remains open to another attempt at the world’s richest race.

The Hong Kong-based superstar, a 10-time Group 1 winner, was narrowly denied victory by Forever Young in a dramatic battle down the stretch at King Abdulaziz Racecourse. Under James McDonald, the multiple Hong Kong Cup champion made a sweeping move around the home turn, only to be edged out by last year’s Saudi Derby hero. The pair finished over ten lengths clear of 2024 runner-up Ushba Tesoro, underscoring the strength of their performance.

Reflecting on the effort, Shum was full of praise for his charge: “It was a great run, and for the next ten years, people will talk about what an incredible race The Saudi Cup was.”

The trainer also confirmed that Romantic Warrior has recovered well, showing no ill effects from his tough run. “He bounced back quickly, his appetite is good, and he’s already back to his normal body weight. He’s very happy in himself.”

While Shum initially suggested that Romantic Warrior’s long-term plans would be centered around Hong Kong, the dramatic nature of last weekend’s race has left the door open for another shot at Saudi Cup glory.

“It depends,” Shum said when asked about a return in 2025. “Next year, Romantic Warrior will be eight, while Forever Young will be five, so it will be more difficult. But I’m not saying no—I’m open to the possibility.”

For now, the focus remains on his upcoming races. Romantic Warrior is back in Dubai, where he has been based since December, and will next contest the Dubai Turf at Meydan on April 5. Following that, Shum is considering a return to Japan for the Yasuda Kinen in June, a race the gelding won last year. However, quarantine protocols remain a potential hurdle.

“I’m still in discussions with the Japanese Racing Authority and the Hong Kong agricultural department. I’d like to go to Japan, but it depends on the quarantine situation,” Shum explained. “If that doesn’t work out, we’ll return to Hong Kong for the Group 2 in November and then the Hong Kong Cup.”

A decision on another Saudi Cup bid will likely be made after those races, with Shum keeping all options open for his remarkable globetrotting star.
