Unbeaten two-year-old Return to Conquer delivered a milestone victory for Te Akau Racing, claiming the Group One Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie in a gutsy performance.
The Snitzel colt, a high-profile purchase from last year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale, extended his perfect record and solidified his future as a valuable stallion prospect.
A $1.3 million acquisition from Blue Gum Farm’s draft, Return to Conquer justified his favoritism, digging deep under Blake Shinn to fend off a late challenge and prevail by a head.
A Historic Win for Te Akau Racing
The victory marked Te Akau Racing’s 100th Group One win, further cementing the stable’s dominance. Leading New Zealand bloodstock buyer David Ellis was behind the purchase, backing the colt’s potential even before securing ownership.
"Full credit to David," said co-trainer Mark Walker. "He’s bought so many top-class horses, and this was a big investment without owners lined up—proving just how good he is."
While the Golden Slipper remains an option, Walker emphasized a patient approach. "He's still developing, so we’ll see how he comes through before making any firm decisions."
Blake Shinn’s Winning Touch
Top Australian jockey Blake Shinn played a key role in the win, praising the colt’s fighting spirit. "The blinkers helped him finish the job today," Shinn noted. "He’s unbeaten for a reason—he’s got a great attitude and a will to win."
Shinn also highlighted his growing connection with Te Akau Racing. "I've put in work with the team, and I feel fortunate to be part of what David has built—it's world-class."
