Barbara Kennedy marked a significant milestone in her New Zealand training career on Wednesday, landing her very first double on Kiwi soil — and doing so in style at the iconic Ellerslie racecourse.
Kennedy saddled up two promising maiden winners on the day: Matzden and Hero Of War, both ridden by her husband, a champion South African jockey and current NZ champion, Warren Kennedy. The duo delivered standout performances, bringing up a well-earned double for the couple in just Barbara's first season training in New Zealand.
Hero Of War turned heads in Race 5 with a sensational debut win, defying his 25/1 starting price to storm home ahead of more fancied rivals. It was a bold display that immediately stamped the youngster as one to watch. Just a race later, Matzden preceded with a strong performance of his own, breaking his maiden tag with authority and completing a memorable afternoon for Team Kennedy.
“It’s incredibly special to get this double, and even more so here at Ellerslie,” Barbara said after the races.
Warren Kennedy, who continues to make waves since relocating to New Zealand, was full of praise for both horses.
The double not only underlines the Kennedys’ growing impact on the New Zealand racing scene but also highlights their trademark professionalism and patient approach. With more young horses in the pipeline, this could be just the beginning.
