Minnie Hauk confirmed her status as Europe’s top staying filly of the season by landing a hard-fought success in the Group 1 Irish Oaks at The Curragh, completing a prestigious Epsom-Irish Oaks double for trainer Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners.
Sent off a heavy 2/11 favorite, the daughter of Frankel didn’t make it easy on her backers, grinding out victory in the final 150 meters after being asked a serious question up the straight.
Her main rival, the improving Wemightakedlongway, nearly spoiled the party. Racing in the silks linked to Drakenstein Stud via their UK-based affiliate Clayton Park, the second favourite put in a brave front-running effort after taking over from the Ballydoyle pacemaker, Island Hopping. But despite being momentarily headed by her stablemate Whirl at Epsom, Minnie Hauk once again proved unyielding under pressure.
This time, she was forced to stalk a changing pace scenario and came under a sustained drive from Ryan Moore turning in. For a few anxious strides, the outcome hung in the balance—but true to her style, Minnie Hauk outstayed the field with her now-familiar relentless stride.
By Frankel out of Multilingual, herself by Dansili, Minnie Hauk has the pedigree to stay, and she's showing the mental strength to match it. Her performances may lack flamboyance, but there’s no questioning her tenacity. With two Classics now to her name, she’s become the sort of filly who wins when it counts.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien for Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Michael Tabor, she becomes O’Brien’s latest to sweep both Oaks, adding to a legacy of fillies that includes names like Alexandrova, Peeping Fawn, and Snowfall.
