Mike de Kock trained his second successive winner of the US$200,000 Al
Rashidiya (Gr.III) when Wolf Whistle dug deep to claim the 1,777 metres turf
race at Nad Al Sheba, on Thursday`s seventh meeting of the 2005 Dubai
International Racing Carnival.
Partnered by Weichong Marwing, who had already ridden two winners earlier in
the evening, Wolf Whistle was towards the rear with the Richard Mullen-partnered
Dutch Gold setting the pace over the Dubai Duty Free (Gr.I) course and distance.
Coming into the straight Wolf Whistle, a Carnival winner on January 27th, was
three wide and began to make progress to lead at the 200 metre post. Shakis,
ridden by Richard Hills and trained by Doug Watson, went with Wolf Whistle on
the rail and the pair fought it out to the line.
As the pair flashed past the post, Wolf Whistle got up by a short head from
Shakis in a photo-finish. Membership, Richard Hughes in the saddle, came with a
late run on the outside to finish four and a three quarters lengths back in
third with Robbie Osborne`s Latino Magic in fourth.
De Kock, who trained Right Approach to win the 2004 Al Rashidiya (Gr.I) and
Dubai Duty Free (Gr.I) in a dead-heat said, "That was a great performance from
Wolf Whistle, he loves to get into a scrap and he generally puts his head down
in the right place. That race did not go according to plan, he was sluggish and
we got squeezed and had to go three deep. For him to win it was impressive. The
Dubai Duty Free is the plan, we are waiting for our invite but after tonight I
am sure we will get it."
Parole Board, trained by Mazin Al Kurdi and ridden by Ted Durcan, was the
easiest of winners in the US$25,000 San Isidro Maiden over 1,400 metres on the
dirt.
Parole Board, who was a runner-up to UAE 2000 Guineas winner Stagelight in a
conditions race on his career debut, has definitely come on for the run and was
always going well throughout the race.
Durcan allowed the son of Dynaformer to take the lead at the 400 metres pole
and was soon clear. The three-year-old was eased near the finish to win by four
and a half lengths from stablemate British Isles and the Godolphin runner Saalb.
Bo Bid gave Al Kurdi a quick double when battling on hard to the line to win
the US$110,000 Nakayama International Stakes over 1,600 metres on the dirt from
the Dhruba Selvaratnam-trained Marbush.
De Kock`s Kill Cat, the mount of Weichong Marwing, set the early pace with
Marbush, under Pat Smullen, coming to take the lead 400 metres out. Bob Bid, who
finished third over this course and distance a week ago, was always travelling
well and soon challenged the leader and the pair were locked in a head to head
battle with Bo Bid getting up on the line to win by half a length.
Damachida, trained in Norway by Eva Sundbye, came from last in the straight
to win the US$120,000 Sandown Park International Stakes over 1,300 metres on the
turf.
Ridden by Marwing, Damachida, was settled in towards the rear with the pace
being set by the Turkish challenger Kaneko. Millennium Force, trained by Mick
Channon, and Jeremy Noseda`s Twilight Blues were running on well in the
closing stages but Damachida was in control 100 metres out and ran on to a half
length win.
Macau challenger Change The Grange, trained by M C Tam, made all to give
Marwing his second win of the evening when claiming the US$90,000
Maisons-Laffitte International Stakes over 1,700 metres.
Coming into the straight Change The Grange always looked the winner and ran
on to a two and three quarter length victory from Dubai Vision and Gold History.
Dhruba Selvaratnam`s Seihali claimed his second Carnival victory when he
landed the US$120,000 Chester International Stakes over 1,600 metres on the
turf. Seihali, a course and distance winner two weeks ago, raced in mid-division
with Godolphin`s Three Graces setting the pace under Frankie Dettori.
Smullen go to work on Seihali and took the lead 300 metres out before
stepping up a gear to win by three quarters of a length from the fast finishing
Trademark with James Bethell`s Mine in third.
Afghan followed up from his course and distance win a week ago when landing
the US$110,000 Hoppegarten International Stakes over 2,000 metres on the dirt.
Afghan, who was winning his third Carnival race, dug deep under Durcan to
fend off the challenges of Alma`arry and Deodatus to win by a length.
Swedish Shave, ridden by Thierry Jarnet, got up in the shadow of the line to
win the final race of the evening, the US$120,000 Naas International Stakes over
1,300 metres on the turf for trainer Richard Gibson. Compton`s Eleven, trained
by Mick Channon, led close home but had to settle for second with Jonny
Ebeneezer coming with a late run to finish third.
