The 17 year old champion sire of South Africa, Jet Master, died peacefully earlier this morning after contracting West Nile Virus in May.
The five times champion sire was a phenomenal producer of group quality horses including a list of Group 1 winners, including the multiple horse of the year, Pocket Power and Gr.1 Hong Kong Sprint winner, J J The Jet Plane.
Jet Master was born in the KZN midlands out of a Rollins mare, Jet Lightning. His sire Rakeen, a son of Northern Dancer, produced many notable horses but none more talented than Jet Master on the track. Beset by breathing issues, he was trained by the high class Geoff Woodruff. The star was kept to the sprint and mile trips where he won 17 races and was crowned the 1999/2000 Hoorse of the Year. He won eight group 1 races in total and retired as a turf legend.
Jet Master then went onto a dream like stud career and passed his track ability to his foals and produced runner after runner for the highest quality winning races in South Africa and internationally at the highest level.
Jet Master was meant to stand this season for R150 000 but was unable to cover due to his illness.
He was owned by Henry and Patricia Devine.
