At first glance there doesn’t seem much to get excited about Fridays nine race card from Singapore but a second look has some interesting races on offer including race 5; a Progress event over 1400m.
SHUTTLE MAN heads the ratings and looks well in with 58kg but the Japanese-bred gelding has been very disappointing since returning from injury.
At his best the 4YO was more than competitive against the likes of BETTER LIFE and SUPER EASY so while he has to be respected on ability, a big query on his form this campaign.
As you would expect, SOUTHERN LORD - a Group 1 winner from New Zealand - is also in very well at the race conditions and also has to be respected on best ability.
But while showing glimpses at four starts at Kranji, the 3YO has yet to show his best and a tilt at the Singapore Guineas on May 17 may be the aim in his first preparation..
So with a question mark on two of the horses rated 71 or above, SAVANNAH DANCER might be a good thing in what is a very suitable race.
The mare has won two and been placed three times (once at Group level over this trip) from six Singapore starts and when you consider she is coming off a solid Group run over 1200m behind EL MILAGRO, she should win this.
The in-form horses she has probably has to beat on Friday include CHINESE CULTURE and GILT LAD but she meets both some 5kg better at handicap conditions so she may even be a ‘good thing’.
Best Bets; SAVANNAH DANCER (race 5, win), LUCKY DIAMOND (race 8, each-way) and VICTORY WINGS (race 7, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12), race 7 (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10), race 8 (1, 4, 5 and 8), race 9 (2 and 3).

RACE 1: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (2) - 1200M COURSE D (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000
Larry says, "A Kranji Stakes D over 1200m on turf opens proceedings with a number of the better chances well drawn and thus should get nice runs in transit. Sivan got 18 months for his ride on JERAM CLIPPER, he is always close up and with Danny Beasley steering from nice gate should be in it for a long way. FAMOUS N FAST has had two runs back from a bleeding attack; he will find this easier than recent encounters in Class 4 and with John Powell on top should get a good run despite his awkward draw. DUTY FREE may be better on Polytrack but is perfectly drawn in one. He will get back but with Oscar Chavez on top should not have to go outside too many horses and will run on strongly. FISCAL WINGS has Moreira and will find this easier than Graduation Class last start; he is no world beater but should be in it for a long way. Amongst the rest, FIFTH DAN is racing well but could get caught wide, SOON YI has plenty of speed but could be used up from wide barrier, EISENHEIM is having first Singapore start and has reasonable form in Queensland but may like longer."

RACE 2: MAIDEN - 1600M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000
Larry says, "A mile race for a bunch on ordinary Maidens on the Polytrack in which there are many chances. FAITHFUL WARRIOR has been a maiden a long time but is coming back to a mile and should be able to sit just off the speed and run on strongly. The fact he has been good in BM53 company suggests he is ready to win. BLAZING SPUR gets back but runs on and is suited at the trip; he gets his chance in this field. RON failed to flatter on turf last start; with blinkers on, a decent draw and Moreira on top he may do better at this trip on the Polytrack. DESERT VIKING has been a maiden a long time but has not been far away at recent starts and has been running on late; may be suited here with no weight and a nice draw. DOMENICO was not far away on turf last start, has a 3kg claim, nice draw and mile should suit. NATURAL AHEAD back to more suitable mile journey and could show up. SAINT VALLEY can run on and is suited by the mile. Of the others CHINESE TYCOON has had many chances but can figure in the placings, SAINT VALLEY battles on and ALWAYS A WINNER showed speed over a shorter distance last start but must be taken on trust at the distance."

RACE 3: CLASS 4 (2) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000
Larry says, "Not a particularly strong Class 4 over 1200m on the Polytrack where three of the better chances put in shockers last start. One of those was DREAMCATCHER who had respiratory problems last start. His previous form was consistent and though Shafiq replaces Moreira, he should race well. DAWN PROSPECT finished well back last start after a strong Maiden win; Corey Brown takes the mount for Michael Freedman and from the good alley dramatic improvement is anticipated. HANG TUAH is not an overly reliable conveyance though he does have two wins in last three; he gets back in his races but will be running on late. PALOMBARO is racing well for Moreira and once again he should be hard to beat. LIGHTNING BALL has also drawn much better after a shocker last start; with Manoel Nunes on top he should race well. ROYAL STYLE returns to the Polytrack with Oscar Chavez; he is fresh and could show up without surprising. SHIN GOONG has speed but is poorly drawn and may have to use petrol early. AFROJACK could be one to watch, he won twice in Australia but is yet to show up in Singapore; he trialed well with blinkers recently and this could make the difference."

RACE 4: INGLIS SYDNEY JUVENILE STAKES OPEN (2YO) (CW) (RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) (ADDITIONAL BONUS OF $30,000 TO WINNING QUALIFIED HORSE)- 1200M COURSE D (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$90000
Larry says, "A two year old race over 1200m on turf with the usual collection of unknowns. Moreira retains the mount on the Mark Walker trained WAR AFFAIR; he flew home late on debut, is perfectly drawn and should get the gun run and be very hard to beat. The “King of the Kids” Theo Kieser has three sound chances; BLACK FIERY ran on strongly on debut, Barend Vorster is to ride and from the good gate should race well; the stablemate INFERMO led them up and was run down on debut, he should have benefited from the experience and the unraced BRINGITHOME looked good winning a trial recently and a bold debut is expected. IN LIKE FLYNN worked hard out wide and battled on at his only start, he should be improved and Corey Brown has the mount. Of Alvin Tan’s pair DRAGON WALK looks a likely type, he has the ace and with Manoel Nunes, a good debut is on the cards. His other runner, SWIFT, has trialled well enough and Dan Beasley gets to steer."

RACE 5: PROGRESS (SET WEIGHTS) - 1400M COURSE D (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 20:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000
Larry says, "A Progressive over 1400m on turf brings together an even field. SAVANNAH DANCER is a good mare who has been racing in much better fields; she is perfectly drawn, has Nunes and is versatile enough to race prominent or sit back and should be hard to hold out. In fact at the race conditions she might be a good thing. GILT LAD always runs a bold race and should do so again from the good gate. The stablemate SHUTTLE MAN looked like he could have been anything in his first preparation, he has had health issues and on resumption has yet to show up, Harry Kassim takes the mount and he could be ready to improve. CHINESE CULTURE kicked strongly to win last start; with Tengku Rehaizat to claim he should be able to sit on the speed and be hard to run down. SOUTHERN LORD has been an enigma since arrival, a Group 1 winner in NZ he has not looked that in Singapore and despite Moreira must be taken on trust. TO BE REMEMBERED was not far away last start and will go better with senior rider on board."

Larry says, "How tough is this maiden with plenty in good form coupled with some handy newcomers. With a special mention to LEWIS, DRAGON G and DARK PULSE - all newcomers with a big show - it might pay to concentrate on the raced horses as race fitness will count for plenty late over 1400m. SACRED GENERAL looks due and although he knows how to find trouble in races, happy to have him on top. Manoel Nunes should get every chance from gate four and it might be a case of whoever beats him wins. QUANTUM LEAP appreciates the first-up run and that looked good enough to follow. Alan Munro is riding in great form and from gate one he might be the value bet in what is a wide open race. Of the rest, SHIPPING FORECAST picks himself and will probably start favourite, SWEET BEAUTY will be value and runs a big race late, INVINCIBLE DRAGON should go well first up with blinkers with STREET CHAMP, MARSHALLETTE (blinkers added) and GALAXY EXPRESS all well and truly in this mix. The tote a great guide for the newcomers with LEWIS the early pick on trial form and his NZ form."

RACE 7: CLASS 4 - 1600M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000
Larry says, "With a tight run into the bend, wide gates over the mile are always a concern. So ROUGH DAY and GOLIATH - from gates 11 and 12 respectively - will need luck and happy to risk them in this field. In saying that a positive ride or that often mentioned ‘luck’ has them right in this on form and both win sooner than later you would think. But a horse like YOURSTOKEEP from gate three looks a better punting option. The 3YO has been a model of consistency of late and given he showed enough stepping up in trip last start, gun apprentice Harry Kassim will be confident of a big run here. Staying with the 3YO's, PURE RABID is worth another look with Alan Munro back on-board. The 'Karate Kid' won on him in maiden Class two back and happy to think he has more to offer in this company than what h showed last start. Another 3YO, VICTORY WINGS, looks in hopeless form with a couple of duck eggs next to his name but you could make excuses and from gate two with Nunes on-top a big run in what is suitable race would not surprise (hopefully at odds but watch for support). PHANTOM KNIGHT might not appreciate gate one (as he will get back) but certainly will come into his own late with luck a much needed commodity given his racing style. "

RACE 8: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (1) - 1200M COURSE D (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 21:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000
Larry says, "BIG READY has only had three career starts but when you consider he has been backed and beaten every-time, he is a risk. In saying that he is slightly back in trip which looks a fair move considering his close up finish to RICHWEST over 1200m two starts back and does meet a solid without being spectacular Kranji Stakes D field here. But happy to find someone to beat him home and hopefully it is the top-weight, LUCKY DIAMOND. The 6YO no world-beater and races only sparingly, but given his good form of late in Class 4 he must be a big show here with a handy 3kg claim for Zawari. He does have a wide gate to contend with - that is a concern - but a positive ride in what is a suitable race should see a result. Others to watch include STREET RUFFIAN who hit the line very well last start and is certainly up to this on his day with ATLIXCO unlucky last start and worth a log each-way look in this field. Not much else to get excited about although a tote watch for NINETYFIVE POWER and HEY WOLF is recommended and it will pay to keep both emergencies safe."

RACE 9: CLASS 4 (1) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000
Larry says, "There is no doubt GOOD LOOUKEN has been very disappointing since winning at his Singapore debut back in June last year. In fact only one placing (November) is all he has to show since that strong first up showing and that is a concern. However, a significant drop to Class 4 and coming off a solid run suggests he is ready to show his best again. He is up against a good Class 4 field though and will need to be on his game with in-form horses like NOT SIMPLE (who very much appreciates gate 1) and WORK AHEAD (who doesn't appreciate jumping from the widest alley) looking big winning shows. Add KAISER BRIGHT, RED RIVER ROCK, SUPERB SUCCESS (late ARADEA) and BE A MAN into the mix with a field box ticked for the minor exotic boxes. "
