Preview Singapore Sunday 5 May 2013

There might only be four races on offer from Singapore today but plenty of options for punters with some quality fields.

Case in point is race 8 on the card where some very capable middle-distance horses do battle in an Open Benchmark event over 1700m on the Poly.

Most went round in a similar event two weeks back where FIRST SCOOP showed he is a horse with a future knocking in his third win-in-a-row at just career start number five.

The 4YO looked to be battling at stages during the race but his now customary finishing burst had him home with a length to spare.

Can he win again?

You would think so given his terrific run of form and the fact he only has to carry an extra 1.5kg for the winning effort.

But Joao Moreira on GREENSTONE might have something to say about that.

FIRST SCOOP beat GREENSTONE fair-and-square into second place last time they met but given Joao had to contend with a wide gate on that occasion, the horse and rider can make amends from a kinder draw on Sunday.

And the race has more to offer than just those two.

Both THE RUDE WARRIOR and SUPERCZAR had plenty of excuses finishing fourth and seventh respectively behind FIRST SCOOP last start and both can have a big say in this finish; hopefully at value.

ITISWHATITIS is the other in-form runner coming into this race and hard to leave out given his liking for this surface.

Best Bets; CANNON HILL (race 10, win), SUPERCZAR (race 8, value) and MATTERHORN (race 9, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 8 (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), race 9 (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9), race 10 (3 and 4), race 11 (1, 2, 9 and 11).

RACE 8: OPEN BENCHMARK 74 - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 16:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "Bar he never looked like winning 200m out last start, there should be no reason not to put FIRST SCOOP on top given his winning form. He has drawn wide which should not be a concern given his late burst but all good runs come to and end and he might find this tougher. GREENSTONE was game last start in the same race so a weight pull in his favour and - probably more importantly - a better gate suggests he can turn the tables. But these types of races can provide value and I'm banking on a couple who looked to be doing best work late in that same race to show up here at hopefully each-way odds. Both THE RUDE WARRIOR and the veteran SUPERCZAR got into strife last start and their work late was excellent. Not much between the two and might be worth including both heavily in exotic combinations or back both each-way. ITISWHATITIS the other who can win what should be a fascinating race."

3 211*1 First Scoop     App T Rehaizat-2 D Koh 9 67 56.5 3.00
Looked to be battling until now customary late burst to win again this company last start; have to follow.
4 31232 Greenstone     J Moreira P Shaw 2 67 56.5 2.50
Jockey and horse smart enough to make use of good gate and win this.
5 51221 Itiswhatitis     M Nunes Hk Tan 8 66 56.0 5.00
Won well last start similar affair and no reason to think he doesnt figure in this finish.

Returned to form two back behind ITISWHATITIS and last start solid; place at value.

Solid and gate one always helps but meets some nice types here and place best.

OK last start but needs it way easier than this.

RACE 9: OPEN BENCHMARK 97 - 1400M COURSE E (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 16:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$95000

Larry says, "No idea! From WHAT NOW at the top of the weights to MATTERHORN on the minimum, most horses look to have a winning chance in this BM97 over 1400m. And the fact WHAT NOW- with all of his six wins over this trip - and last start winner EL PADRINO have been left out of our top four picks doesn't mean they can't run one-two; it's that type of race. But TOUCH OF GOLD coming off two wins and with a career record of five wins from nine career starts looks a good on-top option. He also boasts three wins bookmarking two solid Group runs which included a placing over this trip so he must go close. But MASTHEAD is due. The former Aussie juvenile star has been a tad disappointing not to have won more in Singapore but can add to his win tally (two) at Kranji in what looks a suitable race. TOTALITY beat TOUCH OF GOLD in a similar affair recently so he is in the mix and down the weights, MATTERHORN looks the value."

RACE 10: OPEN BENCHMARK 67 - 1800M COURSE E (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 17:30 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "A very solid staying race and a busy finish is expected. The Long Course E should provide a fair race with the back-markers given every chance. CANNON HILL might be one of those making up ground late. The Pat Shaw-trained 5YO turned some good form into a very strong win last start when blinkers removed and a confident Barend Vorster should give him every chance to show his best. The race has depth though and the lightly-raced US-bred 4YO DRAGONFLY will keep them all honest. His last start win over 1700m on the Poly was full of merit regardless of the fact that his jockey, Joao Moreira, suggested that the horse was not striding freely (rare comment when you jump off a winner). OVER EASY was a horse we have been following at odds and he got his act together last start when blinkers were added suggesting the stable thinks he can win one with no weight before dropping to Class 5. Plenty of other hopes; BEE AHEAD is due, THE GREAT GREY could be just that with TIGER MASTER and JOYOUS EXPRESS also in the hunt. "

RACE 11: CLASS 4 (1) - 1400M COURSE E (LC) (TURF TRACK) TIME: 18:00 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "WONDER is a definitely not a 'get out in the last' type of horse. In fact his last win was in October 2009 and given that was only four starts after his maiden win; he has been 'due' for a very long time. But with nothing else jumping off the page here and the fact Moreira goes on in what looks a suitable race first-up, he gets the reluctant nod. Obviously no confidence in that tip so looking elsewhere COLLECT THE CASH also looks to have found a suitable race and should go well. The 6YO has been in OK form and has three wins over this trip - his most recent without blinkers - and that ticks another box given head-gear is removed for this. MONEY BEE won three back in Class 5 but is going OK so happy to follow and likewise, CAUTION comes into this with a belated maiden win under his belt but winning form will count for plenty and he might just find champagne to his liking."

Not a million miles away at Singapore debut and improves with tongue-tie added and step up in trip in his favour.

Never really in the hunt last start similar race and wide gate suggests we leave alone.
