HAPPY VALENTINE TO SPREAD THE LOVE IN ALLAN ROBERTSON CHAMPIONSHIP

Scottsville's thrilling "day of speed" features four pulsating Gr 1 sprints, all over 1200m, and two of them will see the juveniles taking centre stage on Saturday. As always in races for this age group, it is impossible to gauge how the various contenders are improving relative to each other and relying on bare form can often be a hit-and-miss affair. Throw in the undulating nature of the Scottsville track and the recent history of this particular meeting, where there have been questions about the going on one side (usually the inner) of the track being vastly superior to the other, and it becomes even more clear that one needs to tread with care. Having said that, there are some genuinely exciting youngsters on show and racing fans are guaranteed a superb spectacle in both events.

The fillies take first strike in the Allan Robertson Championship and one is tempted to take a flyer on Vaughan Marshall's Happy Valentine, despite her lack of feature race form. The daughter of Silvano won as she liked on debut and although now taking a huge step up in class, the manner of that first victory suggested that she could go on to much bigger things. She can hardly be a confident selection, being a relatively unknown quantity, but Marshall is an acknowledged master at prepping his juveniles for these big races (he saddled first and third in this very race last year) and he could yet unveil something special here on Saturday.

My Sanctuary is a huge runner and looks the obvious choice on exposed form. A winner of three of her four starts, Duncan Howells's charge suffered her sole defeat in the King's Pact Stakes under very unfortunate - indeed, farcical - circumstances. She resumed normal service when winning The Debutante over this course and distance last time out and the fact that all her victories have in fact come at this track is a huge tick in the box for her. She's done nothing wrong thus far, looks well above average, and should go very close here.

Royalsecuritybaby caused some consternation when, bypassing the maiden ranks, she made her debut in the Strelitzia Stakes and rocketed through late to win narrowly at long odds. It remains to be seen how well that form line pans out, but she won in the style of a filly who can definitely run - and then some. Trainer Kumaran Naidoo has once again engaged Anthony Delpech for the ride and that can only aid the cause. She has to enter calculations, at least for trifecta and quartet purposes.

Two other runners who come into the race straight off a debut win are Paul Lafferty's  Garibondy and Stanley Ferreira's Saint Angelique. As with Happy Valentine, they are pretty much impossible to assess, but each posted a comfortable victory at the first time of asking and either - or both - could well prove to be up to the task despite the jump in class.

Roy Magner's Usisi is yet another one to have won on debut - narrowly, in her case - but she has had a subsequent run, finishing a distant fourth to Virgo's Babe in the SA Fillies Nursery. That was a decent effort as the winner looked a really impressive prospect that day and Magner would not be bringing her down if he did not rate her chances. She should not be ignored.

Alan Greeff's  Winter Fantasy makes the trip up from the Eastern Cape and she merits consideration despite obviously facing a much stiffer task now. She has posted two runaway wins since finishing second on debut and has an eye-catching pedigree. She is one for the larger permutations.

Princess Julietta has turned in two decent efforts since shedding her maiden with a big-margin victory, going down narrowly in both the Strelitzia (she is now 2kg better off with Royalsecuritybaby) and Debutante (now 1.5kg worse off with My Sanctuary). She's honest and has proven she can handle the track, so she could certainly sneak into the frame.

War Path won the King's Pact Stakes on debut, attracting plenty of betting support, but then failed to show in the Strelitzia when a short-priced favourite. She's surely better than that last effort, but it's not easy to recommend her with confidence on that run.

Sea Cat is one of only three fillies in the race to have won more than once and she was unlucky in running when fourth in the Perfect Promise Sprint over this trip at Kenilworth last time out. However, she does need to show more to convince that she can challenge for top honours in this line-up.

Along Came Polly didn't make the worst of debuts when second in the King's Pact Stakes, but now faces a much tougher task and looks to have her work cut out here as a maiden.

Summer Adieu, a winner at the fourth time of asking is another one who looks to be up against it here, although it must be said that her three previous maiden efforts were not too bad: she was placed behind Virgo's Babe and Usisi in her first two runs and the form of those races was duly franked in the SA Fillies Nursery. Her other defeat, interestingly enough, came behind Saint Angelique who, as mentioned, looked smart enough winning on debut.

The line-up is completed by the beautifully-named Boarding Call who won nicely on debut but then looked exposed when downfield in the SA Fillies Nursery, and Masked Lady, who looks well held on her two post-maiden efforts.

It's a tricky-looking contest but one has to stick ones neck out and Happy Valentine is the selection, albeit she will have her work cut out in seeing off My Sanctuary, who is the obvious danger. Usisi and Garibondy are taken to fill the minor placings.
