POMODORO STALLION PROFILE

Former Vodacom Durban July winner Pomodoro (Jet Master) is one of a number of exciting young stallions with their first yearlings on offer in 2017.
Standing at Klawervlei Stud, Pomodoro was a talented and versatile performer, who won from 1160m to 2450m in a career which saw him win or place in six G1 races.

He scored the signature win of his career when landing the 2012 G1 Vodacom Durban July over a field which included champion Beach Beauty (Dynasty), as well as such notable Gr1 winners Solo Traveller (Western Winter), English Garden (Camden Park), Pierre Jourdan (Parade Leader), Top Seller (Al Mufti), and Jackson (Dynasty).

Pomodoro also dead-heated for first place in the 2012 Gr1 SA Derby, where he shared the spoils with Royal Bencher (Greys Inn) and accounted for subsequent Gr1 Sansui Summer Cup winner Wagner (Tiger Ridge).

The versatile bay also notched up wins in the Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes and Listed KZN Guineas Trial and went down just a head to Slumdogmillionaire (Strike Smartly) in the 2012 Gr1 SA Classic.

Perhaps one of the most astonishing performances of Pomodoro’s career came when the 2450 Derby winner accounted for some smart sprinters when landing a conditions plate over 1160m.

In total, Pomodoro won or placed in 17 of his 24 outings and earned over R3.7 million in stakes.

The July winner is one of 22 individual Gr1 winners sired by former Horse Of The Year, and seven times champion sire Jet Master (Rakeen). Other notable performers sired by Jet Master include triple Horse Of The Year Pocket Power, and fellow champions J J The Jet Plane, Mythical Flight, Past Master and Yorker.

The exceptionally well related Pomodoro (he is by a Champion Sire out of a Broodmare Of The Year by a Champion Sire and Broodmare Sire) is out of now deceased Broodmare Of The Year and former Gr2 Gosforth Park Fillies Guineas winner Golden Apple (Northern Guest).

The latter, who provided subsequent champion trainer Sean Tarry with his first big race win, is the dam of four stakes horses in total –including 2011 Gr2 Betting World 1900 dead-heater Golden Chariot (Caesour).

Pomodoro is from the same family as one of history’s greatest sires in the form of triple US champion Danzig (Northern Dancer), whose numerous top class performers include the outstanding sires Danehill, Green Desert, and War Front.

The former July’s first crop go on sale at next week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale and include a colt whose dam is a half sister to top class performers Shades Of Indigo (Indigo Magic) and Silver Mist (Western Winter) (Lot 38), and a colt out of the very smart mare Roman Eagle (Caesour) (Lot 170).
