Whisky Baron Second at Goodwood

Brett Crawford's form stable star and Sun Met winner Whisky Baron gave UK punters a good run for their money as the Australian bred son of Manhatten Rain ran a classy second in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

Winner, Beat The Bank battled bravely to deny Whisky Baron and Stormy Antarctic in the Group 2. Carrying South African form, the gelding has been a tad disappointing overseas but now confirmed his class on the world stage.

So many runners were involved in the finish with Arod, Zonderland and Nyaleti all holding chances, but Andrew Balding’s charge got the job done.

Oisin Murphy was winning his third consecutive Celebration Mile having won the last two with Lightning Spear, who took this year’s Sussex Stakes at the track.

The jockey wouldn’t have been comfortable he was always going to win this time though, as Beat The Bank struggled to hold his position around the bend and then had to fight to come in between horses late on.
Similar to Lord Glitters, softer ground will suit, and he could also go to the QEII at Ascot.
