Star Filly Enable to Stay on Training

Superstar filly Enable will stay in training as a five-year-old, owner Prince Khalid Abdullah has announced.

The John Gosden-trained filly was limited to just three starts this term after an early-season setback, but she made up for lost time as she bagged a second Arc victory at Longchamp in October before adding the Breeders’ Cup Turf to her enviable CV this month.

In winning at Churchill Downs, Enable, whose seven Group 1 wins include three QIPCO British Champions Series triumphs, became the first Arc winner to go on to victory at the American showpiece.

Racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said in a statement: “Prince Khalid is pleased to announce that Enable will stay in training for the 2019 racing season. No racing schedule has been set, but it will feature the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as a prime target.”

Champions Series races seem certain to feature on her agenda and she will set the bar extremely high for new faces tackling middle distances.

Abdullah’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe is looking forward to enjoying another season with Enable

“I think Prince Khalid wanted time to reflect on the Arc and Breeders’ Cup and time to enjoy it before he started to think about the following year,” he said

“Obviously it was important that she was in good shape when she came back. She checked out really well, so from that point of view it gave us the encouragement to go on.”

He added: “I think if we’d had a full year this year, it would be hard to say what might have happened, but she only had one race as a two-year-old, a full season at three and then just three runs this year, so there are not too many miles on the clock.”

Frankie Dettori, her regular rider, told the Daily Mirror: “It’s made my day. She showed what an incredible filly she is this year – the horse of a lifetime.

“It’s easy for horses to show their best when everything is going for them, but she had to miss most of the season with injury and to come back and do what she did was very special.”
