Oh What a Ride, Oh what A Filly

Oh Susanna led from just after the start under an enterprising ride from Richard Fourie to take the Paddock Stakes from almost gun to tape and win the biggest Fillies event in the country, an event sponsored by Cartier.

Lady In Black gave her a massive scare at around the 300m pole when she loomed up a big danger. However, Fourie hadn't pressed the button on Oh Susanna at that stage but he was forced to ask his filly for more as Lady In Black loomed. In a grandstand finish, Fourie found more from the favourite and she kicked on demand. Lady In Black did the same and didn't let up as the two battled. Lady in Black was always a length or so back and could not reduce the deficit. It was a game win from Oh Susanna, owned by Drakenstein Stud, in the colours of the sponsors and also owners of L'Ormarins. Justin Snaith trained the Australian bred.

Cascapedia and Fresnaye followed in the placings with Cascapedia running a decent race after a hard run in the Gauteng Summer Cup last time out. Fresnaye, also in the colours of Drakenstein did well for fourth.

The honours go to a classy ride from Richard Fourie who dictated the pace and did it the hard way to win. It was likely the only way he would ensure a pace and still win. The filly can win from coming off the pace and in front, a truly world class horse.
