Roy Books his Spot

Both owner and horse have seemingly booked their respective slots in the Durban July, one in the Classic Room, the other at the 2200m starting gates. With the draw taking place on Tuesday and this last test passed, it would be a tough selector to leave Roy Had Enough out of the big race.

Roy Moodley has a passion for the horses and having a July runner would rank as a huge deal for him, it was mission accomplished when he saw his star Australian import shoot home on the outside of the track from last to first to win the KZN Derby which isn't a Derby in the true sense, now open to horses of all ages.

The best weighted horses in the race ran crackers and the R6 million purchase Charles was a good second but may have already fluffed his lines in the Daily News when well beaten. He had excuses but in important lead up races you either show up or go home.

Frank Robinson, trainer of Roy Had Enough, was bullish in the 1900 but the pace was all wrong and the race was a disappointment for many. He had no option but to chase this Derby glory in order to qualify and that he did. It's no foregone conclusion though but it would be a disappointment if the winner of this race didn't make it in hence deminishing the important of this day in the capital.

For now, the Grade 3 win is all Roy Moodley and connections have. By Tuesday the coverted July slot may be in the bag too.
