Carl Burger passes on

Sadly former trainer Carl Burger passed away on Monday at the age of 60.

A diabetes sufferer, he had not been in the best of health for an extended period.

After being admitted to hospital a week ago, he unfortunately succumbed to a heart attack.

Mr Burger trained 55 winners under his own name between 2009-15, after previously serving as assistant to Herman Brown Snr, Selvan Moodley, Weiho Marwing and Riaan Van Reenen.

The best he trained was the stayer Grey Cossack. He won the Listed Durbanville Cup in 2010, before a shock 40-1 triumph in the Grade 2 Gold Vase at Greyville on Vodacom July day in 2011.

After having a leg amputated due to diabetes complications he entered into a training partnership with Van Reenen, which produced another 23 successes up to December 2018.

“Carl is best described in the words of Frank Sinatra – ‘I did it my way’ ” was the way his former partner summed him up.
