All Black legend Alan Sutherland of Somerset Stud in the KZN  Midlands passed away earlier today. He was 76.

Sutherland has settled in Kzn and was married to Vera Johns, a former Miss South Africa and Miss Rhodesia. In 1976, the New Zealand rugby team visited South Africa, which is when All Black forward Alan Sutherland methVera Johns. After their marriage early in 1980, they soon settled in the then Natal at Somerset Stud. 

They bred the likes of Durban July winner (trained by Pat Shaw,) Teal, arguably the smallest horse to win the July. Sprinters like Taban came out of the stud as well as the nicely named Readallaboutit.

Alan was literally larger than life. RIP Alan.
