Shadwell's Sheikh Hamdan passes

The United Arab Emirates finance minister and the deputy ruler of the emirate of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has died, Dubai’s ruler said on Twitter on Wednesday.

Sheik Hamdan, aged 75, was the brother of the current ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.

Sheik Hamdan had been unwell for some months.

The owner of Shadwell Stud has been a big supporter of South African Horseracing but recently announced his pull back from Southern Hemisphere interests. His horses still remain in South Africa and largely with trainer Mike De Kock.

"Everyone at Godolphin is deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum. A great loss to Dubai and our sport. He was one of the greatest owner breeders of modern times. Our deepest condolences to His Family and all at Shadwell Stud," Godolphin announced on social media.
