Godolphin pair primed for Juvenile

Progressive duo Modern Games and Albahr look to provide Godolphin with a third victory in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on day one of the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, USA, on Friday, 5 November.

Both Charlie Appleby-trained sons of Dubawi head into the mile championship race following career-best efforts in September, with Modern Games (William Buick) galloping out strongly for an easy win in Newmarket’s G3 Tattersalls Stakes.

Albahr (Frankie Dettori) bids for a second G1 win over a mile having notched a fourth straight success when quickening well from the rear to readily take the Summer Stakes at Woodbine, Canada.

Charlie Appleby, who sent out Outstrip and Line Of Duty to victory in the race, said: “Modern Games and Albahr are two lively candidates and both have nice draws in stall one and two, which is key around a track like Del Mar.

“Modern Games travels very well and should be able to jump and go forward, provided he hits the lids. He is progressing with each run and brings some great form to the table. You need a strong traveller around Del Mar and he certainly ticks that box.

“Albahr is a horse who is going to be picking up the pieces. He is happy to come through horses and reminds me of Line Of Duty in that the rougher the race, the better for him. He brings plenty of experience into this, having already travelled to Woodbine.

“He was slow out of the gates in the Summer Stakes but did everything the right way round. He had a rug on that day, which we will leave off this time to see if it helps him break from the stalls.”
