Makarapa, Restaurant Vilakazi and Soweto

The Joburg season is under way and the 4 Racing team have taken up the mantle with a glamorous day out for the draw of the Summer Cup in Soweto.

The trifecta of goodwill for the operators as the WSB sponsored event had the Makarapa hats, a venue in Soweto called Restaurant Vilakazi and Grooms at the event.

The obvious plan is to engage Joburg's black population, no doubt the brainchild of the new CEO Fundi Sithebe and her team. Well done.

The draw itself was a bit of mess in terms of timing as it was delayed on Tellytrack with the outcome known via social media as the results were already out. For an event of this stature, it could have been delivered live on Tellytrack or on Facebook. If it was, it was badly marketed. There were no shots of the beautiful crowd in the delayed broadcast on Tellytrack and mid way it was cut to cove races, rightful so. Better planning needed. Pity the normally polished presenter Neil Andrews bungled his words calling Ashton Arries and Serino Moodley something marginally inaudible like 'Aron Arries' and 'Selvan Moodley'. Everyone makes mistakes and Andrews rarely does.

The Grooms being present was a Masters toke and including the magificant Macarapa hats made famous in football in Johannesburg was genius.

The Summer Cup field is moderate in terms of the event as a whole but strong on the top end. It speaks volumes that 12 of 19 runners are under sufferance. No Cape raiders or Kzn horses means it's a regional contest.  However the presence of Majestic Mozart, an average Cape horse by anyones imagination made the field but is trained in Gauteng these days.
