Cheyne Appeal for Not Riding Out

APPEAL – JOCKEY GREG CHEYNE

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an Appeal was heard at its offices in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 21 September 2022.

Background

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Gqeberha on Friday 27 May 2022, which was finalised on Wednesday 1 June 2022, Jockey Greg Cheyne was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.3. The particulars being that he failed to ride MARSH MARIGOLD out to the end of Race 6 at Fairview Racecourse on 8 April 2022 to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards thus prejudicing his chances of obtaining first place.

Jockey Cheyne pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Inquiry Board after reviewing the evidence, found Jockey Cheyne guilty as charged. After giving careful consideration to his riding record and all aggravating and mitigating factors, a penalty of a suspension from riding in races for a period of forty-five (45) days was imposed.

Jockey Cheyne was given the Right of Appeal against the finding and the penalty imposed.

The Appeal Board, after having heard the submissions put forward in this matter, both on behalf of the Appellant and on behalf of the Respondent, upheld the penalty and the original judgement stands, with no amendment.

The Appeal fee is forfeited.

As Mr Cheyne is currently abroad, the relevant Racing Authority will be notified of the outcome of the Appeal.
