Wide Draw for top runners upsets festive World Cup atmosphere

A plethora of top contenders can't be thrilled by their Dubai World Cup draws as they pulled off wide barriers

Largely it was not relevant for horses like Country Grammer who likes to sit off them to bother about the draw but then it was as the American drew 14. More importantly for the race, the front runner and chief Japanese contender Panthalassa also drew wide in 15. The fascinating renewal of their rivalry from Saudi with take even more significance as they coming off the widest gates with two different styles. The race is deep though with Vela Azul, the Japan Cup winner in 5 and current favourite Algiers, who won well last time, in 13.
