Kennedy Chooses one Gr1 star over another

Jockey Warren Kennedy faced a challenging decision ahead of the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa. Despite Waitak's impressive victory in the Gr.1 Railway (1200m) on New Year's Day, Kennedy opted to ride Crocetti, citing loyalty to the breeder-owner, Daniel Nakhle.

Kennedy, having developed a close relationship with Nakhle, expressed his commitment to Crocetti, who remains undefeated in seven starts, including notable wins in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) and the Gr.2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m).

While acknowledging Waitak's past success, Kennedy leaned towards him as the better winning chance in the race, given his proficiency over 1400m. However, he noted Crocetti's evolving development and suggested that the extended stride might make 1400m his optimal distance.

Kennedy emphasized the significance of the barrier draw in determining the race outcome, especially considering the contrasting racing styles of Waitak and Crocetti.

Crocetti stands as the $2.50 favorite in the TAB Futures Market for the BCD Group Sprint, followed by Waitak at $5, with Bonny Lass and Quintessa at $8.

The race's result on Saturday will influence Crocetti's autumn plans, potentially leading to an Australian campaign, depending on his performance against older horses.
