Group I firepower launches Meydan’s festive curtain-raiser

Meydan Racecourse wastes no time setting the tone for the winter, rolling out a high-octane “Festive Friday” card that brings together established Group I winners, emerging stars and several horses with Dubai World Cup ambitions. Across nine races, the program features a Purebred Arabian Group I, two Group IIs and three Listed events, with quality spread across dirt and turf.

The night’s centerpiece is the G2 Al Maktoum Mile (1600m, dirt), a AED1 million contest that traditionally shapes the early narrative of the dirt season. Last year’s winner Meshtri returns to defend his title, but the opposition is deeper and more varied this time.

Among those raising the bar is King Gold (pictured), a Group I winner who showed his affinity for the Meydan dirt when taking the G3 Firebreak Stakes over this trip in January before finishing a close second in the G2 Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup night.

Marine Henry, assistant to trainer Nicolas Caullery, believes the horse has lost none of his edge. “That final 200 metres in the Godolphin Mile was exceptional,” she said. “We’re confident he’s come back in the same form, and he’s clearly enjoying being back in Dubai.”

Trainer Bhupat Seemar fields a formidable hand, led by Imperial Emperor, last season’s G2 Al Maktoum Classic winner who progressed all the way to the Dubai World Cup. Seemar admits fitness is the question first time out, but the talent is undeniable.

“He was able to run in a handicap last season despite being a Group horse in the making,” Seemar said. “He’s matured physically and strengthened up. I just hope he’s forward enough to do himself justice.”

Stablemate Killer Collect adds intrigue after a long absence. A three-time winner from six starts, he has not raced since finishing second to Mendelssohn Bay last December.

“He’s a seriously talented horse,” Seemar said. “Unfortunately, his feet have held him back. It’s great to have him back for owners Michael and Negar Burke, who have been incredibly supportive.”

Another newcomer to the Seemar barn is West Saratoga, a G3 Iroquois Stakes winner in the United States who also contested the 2024 Kentucky Derby. Formerly trained by the late Larry Demeritte, the colt begins a new chapter in Dubai.

“We’ll learn about him as we go,” Seemar said. “He’s run at the very top level, but we’ll see how he adapts here. For now, we’re not afraid to test him.”

Mendelssohn Bay, meanwhile, brings race fitness after an authoritative Listed win in the Dubai Creek Mile.

“He beat some very highly rated horses there,” said Paul Ebbs of the Suited & Booted Syndicate. “He’s had a run, he’s proven at the mile, and he’s done nothing wrong.”

Turf spotlight: Godolphin strength in depth

The G2 Al Rashidiya (1800m, turf) serves as an early guide to the G1 Dubai Turf, and few trainers know this race better than Charlie Appleby, who has won it five times. Godolphin fields a trio that blends proven class with course familiarity.

Opera Ballo, ridden by William Buick, seeks a return to form back on a turning track after two defeats on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

“We’ve learned that the Rowley Mile doesn’t play to his strengths,” Appleby said. “Meydan should suit him much better, and we’re hopeful he can get back to winning ways.”

Stable stalwart Nations Pride, a four-time Group I winner, returns from an international campaign, while First Conquest, a dual course winner, arrives fit and proven around Meydan.

Appleby summed it up simply: “We feel we have three strong contenders.”

Standing in their way are Chicago Critic, a Listed winner for Johnny Murtagh, and Caramelito, a French Group 3 winner now trained by Caullery.

Entisar Stakes brings elite dirt performers together

The Listed Entisar Stakes (2000m, dirt) brings together two Group I winners in Walk Of Stars and Kabirkhan, along with rising three-year-old Heart Of Honor, who finished fifth in the G1 Preakness Stakes and has already won three times at Meydan.

Walk Of Stars, trained by Seemar, captured this race last year before going on to win the G1 Maktoum Challenge. He later rebounded from a Saudi Cup disappointment with a strong fourth in the Dubai World Cup.

“This wasn’t originally part of the plan,” Seemar said. “But we felt it made more sense than jumping straight into a Group 1 next time. He’s a bit undercooked, but he’s ready to run.”

Stablemate Kabirkhan, the 2024 G1 Maktoum Challenge winner, is another being built back toward World Cup night.

“He’s a massive horse with less-than-perfect conformation,” Seemar said, “but the way he strides on the dirt is something special.”

Heart Of Honor, trained by Jamie Osborne, receives weight as one of only two three-year-olds in the field and comes off an easy 1600m win on his seasonal return.

“This is a big test against older horses,” Osborne said. “But he’s earned the right to be here, and we’re hopeful.”

Speed and depth elsewhere on the card

The Listed Ertijaal Dubai Dash (1000m, turf) pits recent winners Cover Up and Ponntos against each other once more, with West Acre adding further class. Cover Up’s co-trainer Ed Crisford reports the gelding is stronger after a productive UK summer that included an Ascot win.

Godolphin’s Dubai Treasure, a Listed winner, drops to five furlongs for the first time under Saeed bin Suroor, while British trainer Richard Spencer seeks a breakthrough Dubai win with lightly raced three-year-old The Man.

Earlier on the card, the Listed Business Bay Challenge sees Group performers Marbaan and Mysterious Night renew their rivalry, with Appleby also saddling Al Qudra and Anno Domini.

The meeting opens with the G1 Maktoum Challenge Round I for Purebred Arabians, where last year’s winner Mubeed faces strong opposition including French import Muraad, now trained by Majed Al Jahouri.

The program also features the Shahama Stakes for two-year-old fillies, where Tjareed looks to improve on her debut second to Yuno.

“She needed that first run,” said trainer Julio Olascoaga. “She’s come on nicely since, and I expect a big performance.”

With depth, variety and genuine international class, Meydan’s festive opener delivers a clear message: the road to World Cup night is officially underway.
