Stephen Foster Shapes the Breeders' Cup Classic Picture

Churchill Downs takes center stage on June 27 with a Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) that could redefine the road to the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Four Grade 1 winners headline the $2 million contest, while the winner secures an automatic starting position in the Classic through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, adding further significance to an already outstanding renewal.

The Challenge Series awards winners of designated international stakes races an automatic berth, with entry fees paid, into the corresponding race at the 2026 Breeders' Cup World Championships, scheduled for Oct. 30-31 at Keeneland.

Among the leading contenders is Winchell Thoroughbreds' Magnitude, who already holds a guaranteed place in the Classic after defeating 2025 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic winner Forever Young (JPN) in the Dubai World Cup on March 28. The son of Not This Time returns to American racing for the first time since that career-defining performance.

His campaign follows a path similar to that taken by Gun Runner in 2017, when Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen brought the star back from Dubai to capture the Stephen Foster before going on to Breeders' Cup Classic success later that season. Magnitude arrives with seven victories from 13 starts, although the opposition he faces this weekend is considerably stronger.

Standing squarely in his way is reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty. The Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner dominated last summer, including a commanding 20 3/4-length victory over Magnitude in the Travers Stakes (G1).

An illness forced Sovereignty to miss the Breeders' Cup last season after being installed as the morning-line favorite, but Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has consistently identified the 1 1/4-mile Classic at Keeneland as the colt's principal target this year.

Sovereignty resumed from an eight-month absence on April 18 and showed a different dimension by racing prominently throughout. He repelled longtime rival Journalism before being caught late by White Abarrio, suggesting he retains both his class and tactical versatility heading into Saturday's assignment.

White Abarrio has developed into one of the division's most consistent older runners. The 2023 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic winner arrives off a decisive two-length success in the Oaklawn Handicap, a performance that firmly re-established him among the leading Classic contenders after competing against the likes of Sovereignty and Journalism.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. also strengthens his hand with recent graded stakes winners Forged Steel and Navajo Warrior, giving him three runners in one of the season's deepest Grade 1 contests.

The fourth Grade 1 winner in the field is Baeza, representing C R K Stable and Grandview Equine. Winner of last year's Pennsylvania Derby (G1), he also finished third behind Sovereignty in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, while chasing that same rival home in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2).

Now under the care of Bill Mott following the passing of John Shirreffs, Baeza made an encouraging stable debut in the Alysheba Stakes (G2). Despite a poor start, he rallied strongly to finish third, beaten by less than a length, suggesting there is further improvement to come.

With established stars renewing rivalries and Breeders' Cup qualification on the line, the Stephen Foster promises to provide one of the clearest indicators yet of the shape of this year's Classic division.

Fleur de Lis Offers Distaff Division Clarity

The $500,000 Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) also carries Breeders' Cup Challenge Series status, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

The Distaff division remains wide open despite Nitrogen strengthening her credentials with victory in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) on June 5. Saturday's 1 1/8-mile contest presents another opportunity for the balance of power to shift.

Shred the Gnar enters in outstanding form after winning four of her six starts. Trained by Brian Lynch, the 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief produced a career-best effort when taking the La Troienne Stakes (G1) on May 1 and remains unbeaten in three appearances at Churchill Downs.

Her toughest challenge may come from Splendora, winner of last year's PNC Bank Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1). The Audible mare has already demonstrated her quality at the highest level over shorter trips and now continues her progression against elite fillies and mares over longer distances.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert prepared Splendora for this assignment with victory in the Shawnee Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs on May 30. She now steps up in distance again, having raced only once previously over a similar trip, when finishing second in Grade 2 company during the spring of 2025.

Godolphin's Immersive also seeks redemption after finishing 2 3/4 lengths behind Splendora in the Shawnee. Trained by Brad Cox, the daughter of Nyquist has finished in the exacta in all nine career starts but is searching for her first graded stakes victory since capturing the 2024 NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Regaled completes the leading contenders. The Whit Beckman-trained closer finished third in last year's Distaff and is expected to appreciate Saturday's extended distance.
