Soumillon Secures Reduction in Royal Ascot Suspension

Christophe Soumillon will serve a reduced five-day suspension after successfully appealing the eight-day ban imposed following his ride aboard Puerto Rico in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The decision closes one of the meeting's most closely examined stewarding cases, while leaving intact the finding that led to the original sanction.

Appeal Reduces Suspension

An independent disciplinary panel, chaired by Clement Goldstone KC and comprising Aidan Coleman and Grace Cheng, heard the appeal after convening last week before returning on Thursday to receive final submissions and deliver its decision. The panel reduced Soumillon's suspension from eight days to five.

The case centred on Puerto Rico, one of two runners trained by Aidan O'Brien in the Group One contest. While Ryan Moore partnered eventual runner-up Gstaad, Soumillon took the ride on Puerto Rico, who raced prominently in the early stages before finishing last of the six runners.

Incident Examined by Stewards

The inquiry stemmed from an incident turning for home when Puerto Rico shifted left, causing interference to Power Blue, who eventually finished fourth. That movement prompted the Royal Ascot stewards to investigate whether Soumillon had ridden in a manner that benefited his stablemate, Gstaad.

After reviewing race footage and hearing evidence, including testimony obtained by telephone from Aidan O'Brien, the stewards concluded that Soumillon had ridden his mount "in such a way that intended to give an advantage to another horse from the same stable, in that he moved his mount away from the rail thereby ensuring a clear run for Gstaad on his inside". That finding formed the basis of the original eight-day suspension.

While the appeal panel reduced the penalty to five days, the ruling remains a notable outcome from this year's Royal Ascot, highlighting the scrutiny applied when riding tactics involving stable companions come under official examination.
