Calandagan Returns in Bid to Reignite Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud Challenge

Calandagan returns to action in Sunday's Grade 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud looking to rebound from the only disappointing performance of an otherwise outstanding campaign. The Irish-bred star was well below his best in the Coronation Cup at Epsom, finishing more than 40 lengths behind after struggling in testing underfoot conditions, but his record before that defeat included five consecutive victories headed by success in the Japan Cup.

The Saint-Cloud contest presents an immediate opportunity to restore his standing against top-class opposition. Among those lining up are familiar rivals Lambourn and Aventure, ensuring another high-quality examination over middle distances.

Strong Grade 1 Line-Up

The eight-runner field brings together proven Group performers from Britain, Ireland and France.

Final field:

AVENTURE (IRE) – C Ferland
CALANDAGAN (IRE) – F H Graffard
CUALIFICAR (GB) – A & L Fabre
EYDON (IRE) – A Balding
LAMBOURN (IRE) – A P O'Brien
LEFFARD (FR) – J C Rouget
PRIDE OF ARRAS (IRE) – R M Beckett
SUNLY (GB) – F H Graffard

Pedigree and Connections

Calandagan was bred by Haras De Son Altesse L'Aga Khan SCEA and races in the colours of Aga Khan Studs. Trained in France by Francis-Henri Graffard, he is by Gleneagles out of the Sinndar mare Calayana.

His Epsom defeat remains the exception rather than the rule in a career that has already produced five straight victories before that run, including a Japan Cup triumph. Sunday's return at Saint-Cloud will reveal whether the testing ground at Epsom was simply an anomaly or whether the challengers have narrowed the gap on one of the world's leading middle-distance performers.
