10/07/02 African rider to ride in Nz

If Zimbabwe-born jockey Rogan Norvall is looking for any advice as he starts a riding stint in New Zealand, he could do no better than asking his compatriot Mark du Plessis just how to be successful in his new country. Norvall, 22, began his riding career in South Africa where he claims in excess of 50 winners from approximately 800 rides. Most recently he has been based in Singapore where he has been the track rider for Kranji-based trainer A L Riley. Rogan Norvall will start his New Zealand riding stint from the Cambridge stable of trainer Brian Jenkins, and being able to ride at 51.5kg means he should receive plenty of opportunities from his new base. 9/07/02 Singapore swan song for Tapildo Tapildo (NZ) (Rhythm) lined up for what was possibly her second to last start in Singapore on Friday. The race was her final hit-out in preparation for the S$800,000 Emirates Singapore Derby next weekend. Tapildo finished a half-length behind winner and stablemate Saddle Up (Ind) making it a quinella in the feature event of the night for ex-pat Kiwi Laurie Laxon. Murray Bell reported last week that after the Derby, Tapildo will be heading back to New Zealand and the familiar surroundings of the Sheila Laxon stable. Sheila trained Tapildo to victory in the 2001 New Zealand Oaks at Trentham and one of the mare`s major targets upon her return to New Zealand will be the Group One Wellington Cup (3200m) at the same track. New Zealand played a lead role during racing with horses, trainers and jockeys to the fore. Dana Boy (NZ) (Danasinga) opened the card with a win in the first race for trainer Donald Baertschiger. Race two brought up New Zealander Paddy Busuttin`s first winner of the night when Larry Cassidy kicked home Easy Way (Aus) in the second on the card. Race four was a New Zealand-bred quinella with Inimitable (NZ) (Kingdom Bay) and Olympic (NZ) (Oregon) finishing one, two - it was also a quinella for their trainer Paddy Busuttin. Laurie Laxon grabbed his quinella in the fifth with Saddle Up and Tapildo and just for good measure, Stephen Gray-trained White Diamond (NZ) (Corrupt) chipped in with a win in the seventh on the card.

11/07/02 Spectatorial to Stand at Hallmark Stud, Nz

It was announced today that Group One winning colt Spectatorial would commence his stud duties at Denny and Mark Baker`s Hallmark Stud, Te Kauwhata, New Zealand. Spectatorial, purchased as a late two year old by Arrowfield Stud will stand at Hallmark by arrangement with Arrowfield and its partners in the stallion. Spectatorial, a son of Irish Guineas winner Spectrum, burst into Golden Slipper calculations with a sold win in the Listed Talindert Stakes over 1000m at his first start. At only his second lifetime start he was beaten less than half a length when he came from the outside barrier to finish third in the Blue Diamond Stakes G1, before an impressive win in the time honoured G1 Sires` Produce Stakes over 1400m at Flemington. As a three year old he was desperately unlucky when he finished third in the L`oreal Paris Plate G3 over 1200m on Derby Day. He retires to stud a Group One winner with earnings of A$433,000. "He is just the type of horse that we have been searching for. He is a very good looking horse, correct with plenty of strength. He showed that he had Group One, two year old speed," Hallmark`s Mark Baker said. While he hails from the highly successful Blushing Groom sire line, Spectatorial`s first three dams are stakes winners, he being a son of the Listed Stakes winner Reign of Honour and has the stallions Military Plume, Twig Moss and Kaoru Star filling his next three dams who descend from the great mare Lavendula. Spectatorial has added attraction for a stud career, as he sixth dam is a half sister to 2000 Guineas winner and leading sire My Babu, whose influence has been wide spread in Australasia. "Added to his strong physical and racetrack attributes, more importantly, is the fact that he is free of Northern Dancer and carries a pedigree that looks not only well suited to Northern Dancer line mares but also many of the local New Zealand bloodlines," Mark Baker added. "We`re delighted that Spectatorial will be standing at Hallmark. Denny and Mark have an excellent reputation in the New Zealand industry and Arrowfield will maintain a continuing interest in Spectatorial`s career. He is a stallion that will leave good looking stock, he has a lot of speed and he will be well suited to the Australasian market," said Arrowfield`s John Messara. Spectatorial joins the Hallmark stallion roster at a 2002 fee of NZ$6,500 (plus GST), standing alongside Haayil, The Commander and Diamond Express.

10/07/02 End Sweep (Usa) withdrawn from Stallion Duties

Arrowfield regret to advise that their stallion End Sweep will not be able to serve in Australia in the upcoming Southern Hemisphere Season due to a serious injury to his wither sustained recently in Japan. Despite all the efforts made by the attending veterinarians, the stallion`s response to treatment has been slow. In the light of the above, the Syndicate has had no option but to withdraw the stallion from stud duties in the 2002 season. "We are obviously very disappointed. The horse had been so warmly received by the marketplace here and to have this happen just before his first two year olds hit the track here is really unfortunate," said Arrowfield Chairman John Messara. "At this stage we are working on a replacement stallion for this season. If we are able to secure this horse it will be announced in the next few days," Messara added.

10/07/02 Danehill Mare Tops Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale opened in strong fashion with 130 lots being sold for 1,363,200 guineas, a rise of 90% on last year. The average of 10,486 guineas was a rise of 52% on last year whilst the median rose 8% to 5,000 guineas. The highlight of the day was always going to be the quality consignment of six mares and fillies offered from Cheveley Park Stud and so it proved with two of the sextet providing the two highest prices of the day. The top priced lot was the DANEHILL mare WISH who was purchased by Newmarket based bloodstock agent Jill Lamb for 110,000 guineas. The winning daughter of the Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes winning mare DAZZLE was offered in foal to Cheveley Park`s young stallion sensation PIVOTAL whose daughter MEGAHERTZ extended her unbeaten run in California to five wins with her victory in the inaugural $500,000 American Oaks last Saturday. Jill Lamb, who outbid bloodstock agent Hugo Merry, purchased the mare on behalf of John Warboys who has recently purchased a stud farm in Bedfordshire. POLISH BELLE was the second highest priced sale for the day when she was knocked down to Chris Dudfield`s Natton House Thoroughbreds for 75,000 guineas. The unraced daughter of LAMMTARRA is a half-sister to Group 2 Nassau Stakes winner HAWAJISS out of the Group 1 placed MILL REEF mare CANADIAN MILL. Tattersalls` French representative Bertrand Le Metayer, who run his family`s Haras Du Buff in Normandy, was underbidder. Selling continues at 9.30am on Wednesday, 10th July.

5/07/02 Vote NZ First

- Sir Patrick says New Zealand`s most influential thoroughbred industry leader, Sir Patrick Hogan, has given his backing to New Zealand First`s Racing policy and in a statement from his famed Cambridge Stud has suggested that all industry participants support the Winston Peters led party with their party vote. "I have not been a NZ First supporter in the past, but we [the NZ Racing industry] have given both National and Labour an opportunity and they have completey ignored us", he said. "The two major parties have surely had their opportunity to realise the importance of the NZ thoroughbred industry". A media release from New Zealand First stated that what was needed was "a wise and sympathetic policy found in other horse breeding nations, particularly Ireland". Mr Peter`s announced that New Zealand First would deliver the following policies in order to address industry participants concerns: an improved depreciation regime for stallions and mares a tax advantage for oncourse betting amending the taxation regulations that are patently unfair on the racing industry by putting all gaming on the same footing. Sir Patrick continued: "We have backed two losers in the past. It is important that we do not waste our resource again. We must take this opportunity to give someone else the chance to deliver." "My message to the New Zealand thoroughbred industry is to support New Zealand First. Give them the party vote." "We want progress don`t we ? The others have proven that they will not deliver".

5/07/02 Listed Double for Tattersalls Autumn Yearlings

Following the Royal Ascot win of Tattersalls Autumn Yearling purchase PENTECOST, the two year old duo of BALKENHOL and MAC MELODY continued the Sale`s successful run with a Listed race double at San Siro in Italy yesterday. BALKENHOL, a colt by the late POLAR FALCON, won the Listed Premio Giuseppe de Montel, having been purchased by Arturo Brambilla of BBA (Italia) at last year`s Tattersalls Autumn Yearling Sale for 8,500 guineas. Bred at Anthony Oppenheimer`s Hascombe Stud, BALKENHOL is the first foal out of the PRIMO DOMINIE mare MISS PENTON, who is a daughter of the 1982 1000 Guineas winner ON THE HOUSE. An hour earlier the Mick Quinlan trained two year old filly MAC MELODY had initiated the Autumn Yearling Sale Listed double with a smooth 1 3/4 length success in the Premio Gino Mantovani having broken her maiden at the Milan racecourse in May. MAC MELODY, by 2000 Guineas winner ENTREPRENEUR, was purchased by Paolo Benedetti of Derby Bloodstock for 4,200 guineas from breeder Philip Freedman`s Cliveden Stud. MAC MELODY is the second foal out of the winning CAERLEON mare MILLY OF THE VALLY, whose first foal SCOTT`S VIEW also won yesterday afternoon at Catterick. A Cliveden Stud hat trick was completed at the Yarmouth evening meeting when two year old colt INDIAN HAVEN, a 62,000 guineas Tattersalls October Yearling, made an impressive winning debut. The son of INDIAN RIDGE is out of Cliveden Stud`s Group 2 winning mare MADAME DUBOIS, who is already the dam of Group 1 winning two year old COUNT DUBOIS, and has a SELKIRK colt going to The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale this Autumn.

4/07/02 Tristalove needs a Mate

Tristalove (Sir Tristram-Diamond Lover), the gem of the New Zealand stud book is without a suitor for the coming season. Sir Patrick Hogan had the Group One winning grand daughter of Eight Carat as one of the five mares he had booked into super sire Danehill. "I am pleased that they have made this announcement so early, as it gives us a chance to change our plans", Sir Patrick said on Sunday. Sir Patrick has four mares currently in foal to Danehill; Tristalove, Court, Our Tristalight and Scribbling as well as the Oram/Glenn owned Marquise. The astute Cambridge breeder has made alternative arrangements for four of the five mares he had booked to Danehill. Abbaye and L`Quiz will visit Zabeel, Scribbling will visit Fusaichi Pegasus and Silk Slipper who is being used as a mate for Carol Marshall`s top racemare Giovana will visit Giant`s Causeway. "With no Danehill it really puts Zabeel in the frame and at a very attractive service fee", Sir Patrick said. "The 2005 yearling sale round will be very interesting and with no more Danehill`s many breeders will be retaining their fillies for the broodmare barn over the next couple of seasons". Sir Patrick is delighted to have purchased a Group One winning son of Danehill to stand at stud and is looking forward to another, Viking Ruler joining the roster next spring. Cambridge will hold an open day this Sunday (July 7) at 1.30pm. The open day will give interested breeders and the public the chance to inspect Cambridge Stud`s new sire, Keeper (by Danehill). The Group One winner takes on even more significance now that news that Danehill will not be returning to Australia this spring. Champion sire Zabeel will also be on parade along with other bloodstock from Cambridge Stud.

4/07/02 Tattersalls July Sale Preview

July 9th - 11th Royal Ascot 2002 was something of a Tattersalls showcase with no less than 11 winners at the meeting, more than all other sales companies combined, and some timely reminders of the extraordinary combination of quality and value for money to be found at the Tattersalls July Sale. Leading the way was runaway Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes winner ROMANTIC LIASON who became the third individual Royal Ascot winner for her remarkable dam MY FIRST ROMANCE, who was purchased at the 1995 Tattersalls July Sale by breeder Terry Holdcroft for 20,000 guineas. ROMANTIC LIASON, since sold to Godolphin, followed in the footsteps of her half sister ROMANTIC MYTH, winner of the same race two years ago, and her three year old half brother ZARGUS, who won the Balmoral Handicap on the opening day of this year`s Royal Ascot. Two days after ROMANTIC LIASON`s triumph came yet another spectacular Royal Ascot advertisement for the July Sale, when ULUNDI, a 5,500 guineas July purchase, landed the Listed Wolferton Rated Stakes, adding to his tally of the Scottish Champion Hurdle and the 100,000 Tote Exacta Stakes at Sandown last year. This year`s catalogue combines record numbers with the quality to match including fillies and mares by top sires DANEHILL, DIESIS,GONE WEST, GRAND LODGE, GREEN DESERT, GULCH, IRISH RIVER, LINAMIX, MACHIAVELLIAN, RAINBOW QUEST, SADLER`S WELLS, SHIRLEY HEIGHTS, SILVER HAWK, SINGSPIEL, and WARNING, as well as more than 80 horses in training rated 80 or above by Timeform including last year`s Group 2 German St Leger winner FAIR QUESTION.

3/07/02 Farewell to Luskin Star

Luskin Star one of the greatest two-year-olds to grace the Australian turf has been "put down" on humane grounds at the Newhaven Park Stud outside Boorowa, NSW. A descendant of the potent Star Kingdom line, Luskin Star was a devastating two-year-old winning the Triple Crown of the Golden Slipper Stakes, AJC Sires` Produce and AJC Champagne Stakes by a combined margin of 16 lengths. Max Lees who trained Luskin Star during his two-year-old career said it was a very sad day. He said Australia was unlikely to see another juvenile like him for a long time. Costing only $6,500 as a yearling, Luskin Star raced 17 times for 13 wins and earned $208,990 in Stakes. At Stud, Luskin Star sired around 650 runners for 430 individual winners who earned $22 million.

3/07/02 Widden the home of the Danzigs

In looking for proven alternatives by Danzig, the sire of Danehill, a former European champion sprinter now poised to take the Australian sire`s premiership for the sixth time, breeders could find solace out at the Widden Stud. This historic stud located in the Widden Valley in the western Hunter region has become one of the world`s bastions of the Danzig sire dynasty with four of his best sons on their dual hemisphere sire visiting list. Two of these, Anabaa and Belong to Me, are already sires of Group One winners in the northern hemisphere and also have had early success in Australia including stakes winners, while the others, the Group Oner winners Agnes World and Mujahid, were only put to stud last year. Belong to Me, a winner of seven sprints from16 outings in America, has got off to a flying start in Australia with his first crop of two-year-olds in the current season through to the end of June including eight individual winners. They appeal as tough, sound, tenacious horses and like his American stock should include top three-year-olds.In America Belong to Me had had 34 stakes horses in his first four crops through to the end of 2001 including Group One winners Jersey Girl - challenged as the best three-year-old filly of 1998 - Circle of Life and Lucky Roberto. Three years younger Anabaa stands the northern hemisphere seasons in France and has quickly stamped himself as the world`s best young Danzig sire with his oldest current four-year-olds. His quality as a sire in Europe has been shown up in recent weeks by the success in France of Rouvres (won the Group One Prix Jean Prat ) and Anabaa Blue (successful in the Group Two Grand Prix de Chantilly). Anabaa Blue was rated one of the best two three-year-old colts in France last year, one in which he took out their Derby. That success gave the Australian used Danzig sires the French Oaks-Derby double as Danehill`s daughter Aquarelliste annexed the fillies classic. Anabaa had got off to an impressive start in Europe the previous year, taking out the French champion juvenile sire title with ten winners including Group One winner Amonita. She was rated their best two-year-old filly. He also quickly made his presense felt as a quality sire in Australia with his first crop of two-year-olds racing in 2000-01 comprising ten individual winners. One of these, Donna Natalia, exploded into the limelight with a 5 3/4 lengths win in race record time in the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick. Anabaa has continued to show up here with his oldest three-year-olds in 2001-01supplying some 30 winners of 50 races and in excess of $1.1million to the end of June. The period saw him with the highest percentage of winners to runners of any of the sires in the leading 50 on the Australian sires list. Anabaa`s success is not surprising as he is one of the best European sprinters used in Australia. In fact he challenged as the best sprinter in the world in1996, a year in which he went within a neck of winning all his six outings. He was successful in the first five of them including Group One races in France and England and then finished second as an odds-on favourite in Europe`s premier sprint, the Prix de l`Abbaye de Longchamp, after being slowly away. Widden`s other two Danzig visitors, Mujahid and Agnes World, were also Group One winners in Europe. Mujahid won three of four starts at two, a year he was named the best of the age group in England, and like Danehill finished third in the English Two Thousand Guineas at three, while Japanese owned and trained Agnes World won two Group One sprints in Europe including the Prix de l`Abbaye. He also won races in Japan where he set their national1200 metre record.

2/07/02 Magic Ring To Stand At Richfield Stud Nz

Discerning breeders with a flair for pedigree appreciation should find the Irish stallion import Magic Ring a most exciting proposition. Magic Ring ( Green Desert Emaline, by Empery) comes to New Zealand with a proven breeding record world wide from his five crops to race successfully in 16 countries. He will begin service here at the Richfield Thoroughbred Farm , Te Kauwhata, at a $5000 service fee. Statistics show 303 Magic Ring starters have left 180 winners around the world with most coming to hand early. This represents a highly respectable 59 per cent ratio runners to winners. With this bountiful record, pedigree patterns for his major winners should be readily identifiable . A 1989 horse , Magic Ring belongs to the No 22D family in the Boibinsky notation. Major winners from this immediate family include Soya (Prix Robert Papin), Wildnow (Ascot St), Zank (German Derby) and Cenerentole ( Prix de Sandringham). The notable sire Makarpura, who made such an impact in Australia, is from this same No 22D lineage. A dosage index devised by Dr Steven Roman is readily availabe to measure equine aptitudes .The 2.80 dosage index with 20.5 points left of centre carried by Magic Ring suggests a 1600m aptitude with a strong speedy overtone. This speed was evident in his racetrack record with three wins, including two over 1000m with a Group III ranking as a juvenile in Britain . On another occasion he registered a five length victory only to lose the race following an inquiry. He was also Group I placed in France. There is a much proven linebreeding principle , which suggests that the best results come from gallopers , who are linebred to a notable forebear through a son and a daughter of these key names. If the duplications are through sons only this can down grade colts and geldings. Magic Ring is blessed with a female strain for the ever present Nasrullah, Nearco and Hyperion. Among his foremost stakes and prestige winners, most are linebred to this notable trio. Magic Ring appears to have familiar all-female attributes, which another durable sire Pompeii Court carried to advantage. The super female influence Lalun is carried through Never Bend in Magic Ring`s sire Green Desert. Among Magic Ring`s best around the world are several stars linebred to Lalun through her illustrious sons Never Bend and Bold Reason. New Zealand mares with Frenchpark, Jahafil, Virginia Privateer, Hula Town, Sandtrap, Strike Diamonds and Straight Strike will suit the newcomer admirably with their Lalun presences. Sir Ivor cuts a high profile in the Magic Ring success story so mares with Sir Tristram , Hula Town, Sir Sian, The Commander, Zabeel, Strike Diamonds and Straight Strike make a big appeal. Clarion features regularly in New Zealand pedigrees . This key equine figure is doubled in several international Magic Ring stars so further lines, seen in Starjo, Krona, Hula Town and Sandtrap, should react favourablly with Magic Ring. Other prepotent names in the Magic Ring success story include female lines for Turn-To in Epidaurus, Sandtrap and Tanker Port , Sir Gaylord (Le Belvedere, Blue Razor and Sandtrap), Aureole (Deputy Governor and Nassipour) and War Admiral (Tuscany Flyer, Statutory, the brothers Rhythm and Personal Escort, Iades and Le Belvedere). Northern Dancer can be a problem if all-male factors are employed willy nilly but mares by Statutory, the brothers Rhythm and Personal Escort, Hadaad and Iades should cope. These recommendations suggest that Sandtrap, Strike Diamonds, Straight Strike, Hula Town ( and the Sir Tristram syndrome in general), Deputy Governor and Statutory mares should suit the newcomer admirably. Magic Ring has yet to leave a Group I winner but on bloodline presences and the opportunities they present here , he could soon overcome this deficit once his youngsters hit the tracks. On paper and evidence abroad, they should come to hand early . For more information contact Wayne Ph: 00649266 0085 or fax 00649 267 6144 email [email protected]

2/07/02 New President for the NZTBA By Susan Archer

At its first meeting after last Wednesday`s Annual General meeting, the NZTBA Council elected Peter Hutt as the Association`s 12th President. Mr Hutt, a private breeder and solicitor from Timaru, succeeds John Aubrey, Hamilton who served as President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders` Association since 2001. Peter Francis, Auckland is the Council`s new Vice President and retains his previous role of Treasurer. Rick Williams, Cambridge is the third member of the Council`s new Executive. Nelson Schick elected to stand down from the Executive, but remains on the Council. Mr Hutt, 50, is only the third South Island-based President in the NZTBA`s 54-year history. Ken Austin, Canterbury was the Association`s first President in 1949-50. Bob Nurse, also from Canterbury, led the NZTBA in 1983-84. Peter Hutt has been breeding horses since 1976. He bred and raced Group 3 winner Peat, dam of Group 2 winner Travellin` Man and currently owns two broodmares, Jubilee (by Nassipour) and Shenton Way (by Noble Bijou). He was first elected to the NZTBA Council in 1992 and has been a member of the Council`s Executive since 1996. Mr Hutt was also a committee member of the Timaru Racing Club for almost 20 years, and of the Waimate Racing Club for ten years. He says "I am looking forward to the challenges of advancing the interests of our membership and I emphatically reject calls for the Association to be simply a "breed society". "NZTBA members have clearly indicated their substantial investment and interest in domestic racing. We are therefore committed to working with administrators and politicians to reverse its decline." "The NZTBA`s representation of breeders` interests in matters such as equine health, industry marketing and bloodstock taxation will have far less significance if their direct and indirect investment and participation in New Zealand racing is not also supported." Peter Francis is owner-manager of Professional Printing and Systems, Auckland, and has bred, raced and sold horses in New Zealand for 25 years. He bred and raced, in partnership with friends, the Group One winners Prussian Blue and Ensign Ewart. Peter currently has ownership interests in eight broodmares, four racehorses and nine young thoroughbreds. He has served on the NZTBA Council since 1997. Rick Williams has been general manager of The Oaks, Cambridge since its purchase by Terry Jarvis in 1998. He previously managed Waikato Stud for six years, and Bloomsbury Stud (New Zealand) for three years. Mr Williams has been an NZTBA Councillor since 1996. The NZTBA Annual General Meeting confirmed the election of two new Councillors, Mark Chittick for the northern region, and Sam Williams for the central region. Mark is manager of the Chittick family-owned Waikato Stud, Matamata, and Sam manages Little Avondale Stud, Masterton with his father "Buzz."

2/07/02 Painted Black (Jpn) for Ashwell Farm

Sunday Silence (USA) (Halo) claimed two of America`s most coveted races for three-year-olds, the Grade One double of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, the first two legs of America`s triple crown. As a result of his outstanding racetrack performances, Sunday Silence was named USA Horse of the Year at three before embarking on his stud career at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan. The rest, as they say, is history. Sunday Silence has been Japan`s Champion Sire for the last seven years, he`s also been the Champion Sire of Juveniles for seven of the last eight years. On Friday, Ashwell Farm announced the arrival of Painted Black (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who will join resident sires Kingfisher Mill (USA) (Riverman), Shinko King (Ire) (Fairy King) and D`Cash (Aus) (Danehill) on the stallion roster at Ashwell Farm in 2002. "I am convinced that the Sunday Silence sire line will work here in New Zealand as they are tough horses that cope with hard racing," said Ray Knight of Ashwell Farm. "His horses excel over classic distances as three-year-olds, which is what New Zealand breeders are famous for producing," he said. A Classic three-year-old, Painted Black won the Group Three Aoba Stakes, one of three wins for the horse leading into the Japan Derby. His final start at three produced a win in the Group Two Stayers Stakes defeating T M Opera O, who was later that year named Champion three-year-old Colt of Japan and went on to claim the Horse of the Year title the following season. "He was clearly a smart three-year-old that had a lot of potential," said Ray. Painted Black`s dam, Oak Tree, was stakes placed and is by Real Shadai who won the Group Two Grand Prix de Deauville, he also ran second in the French Derby. Shadai Ivor, who is Painted Black`s grand-dam, won the Japanese Oaks. Painted Black joins Summer Suspicion (Jpn) as another son of Sunday Silence to stand in New Zealand. The influence of Sunday Silence as a sire in the Southern Hemisphere can be seen through the deeds of, Fuji Kiseki (Jpn) who stands at Arrowfield Stud. Fuji Kiseki is second on the leading sire`s list of two-year-olds in Australia this season. Painted Black will be a resident stallion at Ashwell Farm and 2002 will be his first season at stud. His service fee will be NZ$5,000 +GST.

1/07/02 The Thorn Park Story

Like Shogun Lodge, Thorn Park was purchased at the Easter Yearling Sale for $200,000 by Les Samba. Offered by Coolmore Australia as agent, the result was a most profitable one given that Coolmore paid just $60,000 for the colt at the Select Weanling Sale the year before. Both Thorn Park and his dam Joy, were sold in a reduction of stock by prominent owner Tony Huang. Joy topped the 2000 Australian Broodmare Sale, fetching $470,000 to the bid of Wakefield Stud, a price that looks well justified given her blue chip pedigree and the obvious potential of Thorn Park. Joy is an unraced half-sister to brilliant mare Light Up the World, by Bluebird (USA) from Christmas Spirit, a grand-daughter of one of the most influential matrons in the studbook, Denise`s Joy. Joy suffered an injury while spelling as a two year old and was unable to achieve her true potential as a racehorse, but her worth in the breeding arena is assured. She has a weanling colt by Flying Spur and is due to foal to Anabaa (USA) this spring.

1/07/02 Inglis Winter Thoroughbred Sale 19th July, Newmarket, Sydney

The 2002 Winter Thoroughbred Sale promises to be a bright spot on the winter sales calendar, with some 282 mixed lots including: 95 tried racehorses, 57 yearlings, 22 weanlings, 2 stallions and 105 quality broodmares, highlighted by a dispersal of stock from Lucernevale Stud and a sizable reduction of broodmares and race fillies from Gooree Park Stud. The Lucernevale Stud Dispersal comprises 13 weanlings, by sires such as Langfuhr (CAN), Zeditave and Covetous, in addition to 15 broodmares and one race filly. Highlights among the Lucernevale mares include: Lot 93, SINGLE LINER, dam of stakes-winner Top Comedian, served by Ashkalani (IRE); Lot 94, ROADSTOP, metropolitan winning sister to stakes-winner Condotti and three-quarter sister to Blue Diamond winner Road to Success, served by Zeditave; and Lot 99, ANCIENT ALBATROSS, half-sister to stakes-winner Danajaya, served by Langfuhr (CAN); etc. Buyers will have a unique opportunity to tap into some of Gooree Park Stud`s most successful bloodlines, with 21 broodmares, four race fillies and one colt catalogued for sale. A full preview of the Gooree Stud mares will appear in next week`s Inglis Updates. The racehorse section includes classy stakes-winning sprinter Crete and stakes-placed Zodiac Star; also metropolitan winners Tara Express, She Sizzles, Gallant Pride, Boston, etc. BRINGING JOY, Lot 217, a smart winner at Randwick last Wednesday, is sure to command plenty of interest. The lightly raced three year old filly is by Danehill (USA) from the family of Rory`s Jester and Ha Ha. Ultra smart sprinter GRANDISER, Lot 237, a brilliant winner of four races from seven starts is an interesting entry given his status as a two time bleeder. As such, he is banned from racing in Australia and will be looking for new owners with aspirations to race him in America. Also included, a reduction of tried racehorses from Tarcoola Park Thoroughbreds.

29/06/02 No Danehill but Giant`s Causeway to Shuttle to Australia

Danehill will not shuttle to Australia for the 2002 breeding season. He has been shuttling to Australia since 1990 where he has enjoyed unprecedented success. Coolmore has decided to rest him for the 2002 southern hemisphere breeding season. The good news, however is that the Iron Horse` Giant`s Causeway will be available to breeders at Coolmore Australia this season. The best ever son of world-leading sire Storm Cat, out of champion racemare Mariah`s Storm, Giant`s Causeway won six Group One races and was placed second in another three. An unbeaten Group One winner at two, Giant`s Causeway went on to earn his Iron Horse` tag with an unbroken sequence of five Group One wins at three, the first horse to do so since Nijinsky, nearly 30 years earlier. "We believe Giant`s Causeway is sure to appeal to breeders as a very worthy and viable alternative to Danehill for the coming season. Danehill`s progeny are best known for their ability and toughness, and Giant`s Causeway was one of the best and toughest horses ever to have raced in Europe. He is also getting outstanding first foals in the Northern Hemishphere," commented Coolmore Australia manager Michael Kirwan. His fee has been set at $125,000 (+ GST).
