RAKTI IS CHAMPION FOR JARVIS

Newmarket`s longest-serving trainer Michael Jarvis landed the town`s richest race when Rakti, having only his third start of the year, landed the 400,000 Group 1 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes by two lengths from Carnival Dancer.

"He`s been working unbelievably," said Jarvis, who has trained in Newmarket since 1968. "We don`t time our horses at home but he has been finishing seven-furlong gallops like a top sprinter. He`d be pretty high up among the best horses I have trained.

"He had a small crack in his left hind fetlock after running Ascot and was in his box for four weeks. But as a result he had a nice break and was probably one of the freshest horses in the race. It`s very satisfying to come back after a quite serious injury like that.

"He refused to go into the stalls in this race last year although I didn`t have him then and we did have problems in Rome earlier in the year. But he`s spent a lot of time with Yarmy (Steve Dyble) sorting him out and the horse recognises Yarmy`s voice from 30 yards away.

"We have had an invitation to the Japan Cup but I think a mile and a half would be stretching him and I hope to take him to Hong Kong. I haven`t spoken to (owner) Mr Tanaka but I hope he`ll be back next year as there`s very little mileage on the clock."

Owner Gary Tanaka, 60, was born in Idaho but moved to Britain from San Francisco in the 1980s and now lives near Kingston-Upon-Thames. He buys proven horses in training rather than yearlings and his colours have been carried by the likes of User Friendly, Hightori, Docksider, Corrupt, Bluegrass Prince, Blues Traveller Keltos and Milk It Mick`s sire Millkom.

"We`ve been lucky to have found some good milers like Keltos and Docksider but this is great," said Tanaka. "I bought this horse before his Italian Derby success last year and, despite winning that race over a mile and a half, his best distance is a mile and a quarter.

"As Falbrav has shown this year, with these Italian horses you are not taken seriously unless you win a Group 1 race outside Italy. He might now go to Rome and then on to Hong Kong and at the moment the plan is to keep him in training next year."

Winning rider Philip Robinson said: "My personal opinion is that he might be the best miler in the world, it`s very rare that you travel that well in a race like that. I was a bit worried beforehand that there wouldn`t be enough pace - but it was just enough to settle him as he is very strong - he`s a very good horse - a machine. He is as good as gold in the stalls now - Yarmy has done a wonderful job."

Carnival Dancer belied his 33/1 odds to finish second and will now retire to to his owner`s Cheveley Park Stud. "He`s run a blinder and we`ve always said he`s had a lot of ability," said Chris Richardson, the stud`s managing director.

"The change of scenery has really worked this year and I couldn`t compliment Amanda and Mark Perrett and their team enough for what they`ve achieved with him."

Speaking about Russian Rhythm, Richardson added: "The filly didn`t find much when Kieren Fallon pressed the button, there was not a lot there. Maybe we went to the well once too often this year."
