The Gary Player Stud sire and international Group 1 winner, Wolfhound, has died.

"He had a heart attack and died doing what he liked to do best - on the job," according to John Freeman, who managed him.

"Then in the month following his death he had a spate of winners - even getting 3 in one day.

"Wolfhound was not only a champion racehorse, but is a son of one of the world's most influential broodmares, Lassie Dear. His sire Nureyev is one of the world's great broodmare sires, so Wolfie is surely bred to be a broodmare sire himself and we are banking on him being just that.

"If you've got one look after her and if you haven't got one you have one last rare opportunity to get one this year. There are none on the National Yearling Sales but we know there are some around so keep a sharp look at later sales.

Wolfhound won 6 races in England from 1000m to 1400m. He was rated 126 by Timeform. At 2 he was unbeaten in two starts and at 3 he won the Gr1 Prix de la Foret (1400m) and the Gr3 Diadem S. (1200m). At his prime at 4 he was the European Champion Sprinter having won the Gr1 Haydock Sprint (1200m) and a runner-up berth in the Gr2 Kings Stand S. (1000m).
