OUR GIANT SET FOR INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN

International trainer Mike de Kock has added another South African star to his vast overseas string by purchasing last Sunday's facile Mercury Sprint winner Our Giant from Johannesburg businessman Marcus Jooste.

The Australian-bred son of Giant's Causeway has been bought, according to De Kock, "with a view to an overseas campaign," which doubtless means the Dubai Carnival and perhaps Britain in 2010.

The five-year-old Our Giant has won 12 of his 30 starts for champion trainer for the 2008/2009 South African season, Charles Laird, including last year's Grade 1 Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m.

He was also second to Pocket Power over two furlongs further in last year's J & B Met. The star galloper is a half brother to the once defeated Singapore star, Rocket Man.

Laird considered that his "pet distance in his whole career was seven furlongs" but it was Our Giant's performance over 1200m last Sunday that so excited South African racegoers and professionals.

The Mercury Sprint at Clairwood was only Our Giant's second run over sprint distances yet he totally outclassed the 13-strong field, producing an electrifying turn of foot to score by 4¼ lengths.

While this was a substandard Grade 1, the way Our Giant won suggested he would have been hard to beat in the season's other Grade 1 6f race, the Golden Horse Casino in May.

In other news from the stable, The International Group 1 winner, Sun Classique, has been retired with a view to visiting Redoute's Choice in Australia. Part-owner, Lionel Cohen, has strong Australian links and the mare will no doubt find a home in that country.-Racing Post/SAHracing.COM
