National 2 yo Sale: R1-million sale topper doubles 2009

On day two there was cAUS

e for celebration when a Dynasty (pictured) colt sold for R1 million. A magnificent specimen, the colt, named Jackson, was consigned by Highlands Farm. Ian Longmore bought the colt, who currently tops the sale. He is from the wonderful international No Class family, responsible for such champions as Dance Smartly, Sky Classic and champion US sire Smart Strike. The latter is the sire of the 2010 Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky. Many experts were raving about lot 238. A handsome, powerful son of Silvano, the colt duly attracted his share of attention. Consigned by Danika Stud as Agent, the colt, named Desert Raptor was knocked down to Alec Laird for R380 000. Desert Raptor’s dam, Oasis Song, is a half-sister to the stakes winning filly Atlantic Storm.

Varsfontein Stud’s draft continues to sell well. They offered Prince Igor, lot 187, a son of champion sire Jet Master. Patrick Kalil purchased the colt for R375 000.

After the first 250 lots, the average of R68,447 was down from last year’s R76,338. 161 found homes, 33 were withdrawn and 56 were not sold. The highest price lot, however, of R1-million far exceeded 2009’s R550,000.

The TBA’s CEO Jan Naude said of the sale and its prices,” The aftermath of the recession has caught up with the racing industry. Buyers are more hesitant with their buying patterns. They are more discerning in their purchases and selecting and valuing their purchases.”
