PREVIEW: SINGAPORE SUNDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2012

Five races on the card from Singapore on Sunday - all on the Short Course (B), Turf – and while there are some terrific horses to follow on the day, the highlight is the $150,000 Woodlands Classic Stakes over 2,000m (race 9).

GINGERBREAD MAN heads the ratings and the weights but at the race conditions the ten-time winner looks a very good thing on paper.

In fact, although carrying 59kg, the SHAMARDAL entire gets is an incredible 3kg better off at the weights than the out-of-sorts NEW ROSE WOOD and 4kg better off than possibly his biggest danger, FATKID.

He has also shown that competing at this level over ground is not an issue – his second to ALWAYS CERTAIN over 1800m was an excellent run – and certainly looks the one the others have to beat in this.

The undercard (with the obvious exception of race 8) is a beauty as some very smart youngsters get to show if the have what it takes to go through the ranks in Singapore.

INDICIO (race 7), CHATEAUNEUF DUPAPE and KOMPRESSOR (race 10) and SPEEDY CAT (race 11) all look like 3YO’s with huge futures and horses to follow in 2012.

SPEEDY CAT in particular has shown enormous potential – he equaled the course record on debut over 1100m – and hard to beat in the lucky last.

Best Bets; GINGERBREAD MAN (Race 9, win), SPEEDY CAT (race 10, win) and MR RAFFLES (race 7, each-way).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 8 (1, 2, 3 and 4) race 9 (1), race 10 (3 and 9) and race 11 (9).

RACE 7: OPEN BENCHMARK 83 - 1200M COURSE B (SC) TIME: 15:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$95000

Larry says, "A great race on paper with some very smart up-and-comers in INDICIO and ONE MORE MINUTE looking to continue their great run of winning form against some quality types at the top of the weights in ART OF SPEED and MR RAFFLES. And while you can make a strong case for the four mentioned, I have leaned towards MR RAFFLES with some value in mind given his last run was good enough in strong company to think he enjoys the Class reprieve. The handsome STORM CREEK gelding doesn't win often enough to be heavily supported but expect some stable money with blinkers removed and a bold run is on the cards. But he will want to be having a good day as ONE MORE MINUTE and INDICIO know how to win. ONE MORE MINUTE resumed with a smart win at his last start to make it four wins a place from his six career starts and INDICIO - who carries only 50.5kg today - easily accounted for his opposition to score his third win on the trot at start number four. ART OF SPEED resumes after a bleeding attack but worth serious thought on ability, the 3kg claim and very strong recent trial. "

First up since bleeding attack in the the Derby but smart, has trailed well and pay to keep very safe.
2 2*575 Mr Raffles     G Cheyne M Freedman 1 80 58.0 4.50
Last run in nice company good enough to follow here with blinkers removed but obviously overdue.
3 80005 Oneninetyfive     S Baster B Dean 2 80 58.0 40
Showed glimpses late last start so look for improvement at third run back.
4 21141 One More Minute     J Moreira S Burridge 6 78 57.0 2.00
Won too well first run back not to think he will continue his great run of form in this - hard to beat.

6 16317 My Friend Jo     App Sh Low-2 D Baertschiger 8 77 56.5 20
Will be competitive with best work expected late and add value to exotics.
7 71123 People's Victory     B Vorster P Shaw 3 74 55.0 8.00
Looked to have every chance last start but obviously competitive and will keep a few honest.
8 2111 Indicio     J Saimee S Gray 7 65 50.5 5.00
Didnt beat a lot last start but that win still convincing enough to follow with just 50.5kg.

RACE 8: CLASS 5 (2) - 1200M COURSE B (SC) TIME: 16:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "This race could be best described as a thorn between two roses. While there is form aplenty and load of ability in races 7 and 9, race 8 is the proverbial stinker. In fact the likely fave - RISING SHADOW - is coming off a 14 length beating and not sure how you can have any confidence heading into this race. In saying that, we were on him last start so prepared to forgive that shocker and hope Joao Moreira gets the best out of him. He did win three starts back and has a recent turf placing so should be thereabouts. A horse that may benefit from the poor field is HEAR ME and he might be the value as well. His last run was better than the result and certainly good enough to figure if in the mood. ABYSS and WHYDOYOUASK figure somewhere but both have turf queries. Ugly race - play with caution."

1 850*9 Hear Me     S John S Chua 5 37 57.5 8.00
Form reads badly but last start better than the result and good enough to win in what looks a weak field.
2 7*120 Rising Shadow     J Moreira T Kieser 2 37 57.5 2.30
Put in shocker last start and while that was a concern his form prior to that has him winning again here.
3 25946 Abyss     S Baster B Dean 9 36 57.0 4.00
Resuming and while a big run is expected fresh he is a better winning option on the Poly.
4 414*0 Whydoyouask     E Aslam-1 B Dean 8 35 56.5 4.50
Another coming off a poor run but form prior suggests he goes close although question mark on the turf.

Thereabouts as a rule and could make his presence felt late if having a good day.
8 07770 Kylene     App Th Koh-3 L Laxon 3 26 52.0 12
Form just fair and not seen often on the turf but had support last start and not the worst here.

Can include in exotics.
10 *6004 Maha Veeran     M Zaki-1 D Hill 6 23 50.5 20
Last start better and another for exotics in a race with little depth.

RACE 9: WOODLANDS CLASSIC STAKES (3+YO) (CW) (RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) - 2000M COURSE B (SC) TIME: 16:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$150000

Larry says, "Although asked to carry the top-weight of 59kg, GINGERBREAD MAN is the best weighted horse at the race conditions and with good form to his name, a very good thing on paper. And as it his first trip over 2000m and given the big weight, the SHAMARDAL entire might just be value and one of the better bets on the card. Obviously his run over 1800m carrying 56.5kg when finishing second behind ALWAYS CERTAIN in July last year suggests he handles this type of race and it could be a case of 'who runs second'? Obviously it won't be that easy with some very capable horses carrying less weight but the next best 'race weighted' horse in NEW ROSE WOOD and her form just doesn't seem up to winning this. Of the rest I suggest going wide in exotics with special mention to MAURICE UTRILLO who had no luck last start and should run well today and FATKID who has to be improved after stringing a few runs together this campaign. 1 24123 Gingerbread Man     O Bosson Rb Marsh 7 108 59.0 2.50
Top-weight a big ask over 2000m but actually in very well at the conditions and too good a competitor not to be the one to beat.
2 78783 Fatkid     S Baster Hk Tan 8 94 56.0 5.00
Effort to place in the fortune bowl under similar conditions was huge given the run - big show.
3 33053 Maurice Utrillo     J Moreira P Shaw 5 87 56.0 4.00
Never a hope last start given the walls he hit in the straight and some show in this especially on a good track.
4 57274 South Easter     G Cheyne P Shaw 2 82 55.0 20
Battled on well last start after making the running and in this a long way.
5 61339 Power Blitz     B Vorster P Shaw 3 80 55.0 8.00
Ignore run in Fortune Bowl where he got severely checked and keep very safe on good form prior.
6 75242 Silveron Wings     I Santana Kc Yeoh 6 78 55.0 10
Always runs a solid race and always best work late but just needs a result for his efforts.
7 54212 Mitre Peak     A Munro H Takaoka 1 75 54.0 7.00
Put in a remarkable effort given the ratings in the Fortune Bowl and has to be a big show on that run.
8 08045 New Rose Wood     O Placais C Brown 4 89 52.5 30
Second up effort just fair but in very well at the race conditions and would be a big show if anywhere near her best.

RACE 10: NOVICE (SET WEIGHTS) - 1200M COURSE B (SC) TIME: 17:30 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "This looks a race in two between CHATEAUNEUF DUPAPE and KOMPRESSOR (incidentally two things that can found in all good trainers cellar or garage). CHATEAUNEUF DUPAPE, who had formerly raced in Australia and New Zealand, had plenty of hype at his Singapore debut and although having a good battle the length of the straight with ISLE OF ARRAN, duly saluted. KOMPRESSOR also came into his race debut with plenty of interest coming off a smart trial win and he also had a battle but got the chocolates for those who took the short odds on offer. In both those races the Don Baertschiger-trained BE LUCKY was keeping the winners honest and that similar form line suggests there won't be much between them. Eventually I had KOMPRESSOR on top due to the fact he has had the second up run under his belt and although beaten a long way into second on that occasion, he wasn't knocked about and it was by a very smart type in SPEEDY CAT. A toss up though and a strong forecast is on the cards. Of the rest, I think JERAM GLORY is definitely a horse to follow and fresh enough to go well over 1200m with RIEZO some show on his good last start although he is giving weight to the younger horses. Giving weight to a few of the younger horses at the race conditions but showed plenty last start and pay to follow.
2 0*044 Super Star     D Chee L Khoo 3 44 58.0 50
Form OK but hopeless at the weights and Class 5 beckons.
3 1 Chateauneuf Dupape     J Moreira M Freedman 1 57 55.0 2.00
Had to dig deep to win at Singapore debut but looks the one to beat here after drawing the inside gate (again).
4 2122 Jeram Glory     O Placais C Brown 9 55 55.0 5.00
Smart and fresh enough to think he has a big say in this.
5 92414 Bungae     S Baster C Brown 4 54 55.0 15
Competitive type and can follow but might find a couple of these too strong.
6 8*1 Bulldozer     A Munro Zl Mok 8 53 55.0 12
Coming off a nice Restricted win and pay to respect.
7 *0* Liberty     I Saifudin J O'hara 6 0 55.0 200
Would be nice if he decides to take part this time.
8 19 Fong Su     J Saimee Zl Mok 7 54 51.5 30
Could have finished closer last start but place a fair result in this field.
9 1*2 Kompressor     O Chavez S Chua 5 52 51.5 3.50
Won well on debut and did more than enough behind the very smart SPEEDY CAT last start to think he is the big danger.
10 1252 Work Ahead     M Zaki-1 Hw Tan 2 50 51.5 30
Honest enough but might just lack a yard or two against a couple of these.

RACE 11: CLASS 3 - 1200M COURSE B (SC) TIME: 18:00 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "SPEEDY CAT is a horse going places. The Scaredee Cat 3YO has taken all before him at his two starts in Singapore - equaling the course record for 1100m on debut and bolting in last time out - and one wonders if anything in Class 3 is going to good enough to stop his run given he carries just 52kg. I don't think there is, although the star of the HW Tan stable has drawn the outside gate and might not get it as easy as he has at his last couple from a bad alley. But that won't bother the punters (he has jumped from the widest gate at both starts) and he could start as short as $1.06 on the Singapore tote (minimum). Who runs second? GLOWNIGHT RACER showed more than enough at his Singapore debut to follow while BRUNEI ROYAL could be the big improver with blinkers on at the races first time. Of the rest, EATONS GOLD looks well in down in the weights with value likely for solid types in RISING EXPECTATIONS and MAPLE STAR."

In the mix as a rule and worth an each-way look if you dont like the fave.

Another that always gives a good account of himself - usually at terrific value - follow.

Obviously a lot to like about his Singapore debut and will have admirers to win this.
5 26255 Brunei Royal     G Cheyne P Shaw 8 67 54.0 20
Has been disappointing not to have won at ten starts in Singapore but recent trial with blinkers very good and head-gear added today could do the trick.

Competitive in this company last start and in this a long way from gate one.

Goes well and worth following although dropping back from the mile a slight concern.
