PREVIEW: SINGAPORE FRIDAY 17 AUGUST2012

After a ‘Swedish Sojourn’ that saw Magic Moreira add another country to his winning hit-list, Joao is back in Singapore and ready to fire on Friday night.

Moreira has a full-book of rides on the 10 race all-Polytrack card and handful of winners would not surprise.

But it won’t all be about the Brazilian Ace on Friday with strong field lining up for the Causeway Classic Stakes (race 7) - a SGD $150,000 ‘mini-feature’ over 1800m.

Moreira rides the likely punters elect in DUJARDIN and the Laurie Laxon-trained 5YO looks very well placed to continue his great run of form on the Polytrack surface.

The MAGIC RING gelding did enough in Emirates Singapore Derby to think 52.5kg at the set-weight conditions is a luxury today and given he has won at both attempts on the Polytrack, he must be the horse to beat.

Stephen Baster – fresh from riding four winners at Kranji last Sunday – can continue his golden run and his mount, FREEZEMASTER, looks the biggest danger to DUJARDIN.

The RESET 5YO lost no friends in defeat last time out in nice company and given the ease of his win two starts ago and a win on the surface on his CV, he will go very close.

Race 9 - a Novice event over 1200m – also looks a beauty and while Baster and Moreira have strong winning hopes in PITSTOP and SUPER JUNIOR respectively, it could be Barend Vorster on SUPER KENNY who visits the winners circle.

Like Baster, Vorster is in red-hot form coming off a treble from last Sunday and the popular South African hoop will be hoping SUPER KENNY, the beaten favourite in the Juvenile Championship, can bounce back to the winning form he showed on debut when he won by nine-lengths.

Two great races, three in-form jockeys and hopefully….a good night for punting!

Best Bets; EMERALD HILL (race 10, win), SUPER KENNY (race 9, win), HAPPY ENDING (race 6, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (5, 6, and 7), race 8 (1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9), race 9 (5, 8, 9 and 11) and race 10 (1).

RACE 1: CLASS 5 (1) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "Multiple entries from astute trainers and a gaggle of class droppers confuse this Class 5 over 1100m. Sam Chua has an extremely good record in these races and he has three entries. SANTA ANITA has been placed at its last two starts in similar events, once when ridden by Moreira and he gets another chance here. The horse should be on or near the lead most of the way and will be hard to run down, though the concern is that in most of his races he does not fight strongly enough at the finish. The stablemate SAMURAI KID is getting into the veteran class, but he is a five time winner. He led last start and boxed on well for little P Dellorto, with S John taking the ride a more patient exhibition can be anticipated and he will run out a strong 1100m. Sam’s third runner, SHEN KIM to be ridden by Tommy Chang, is returning to Class 5 where he won twice in March and April. His best efforts have been when allowed a soft lead in front and with the man they call “Tommy Gun” on top from barrier 3, that is where he will almost certainly be. Leslie Khoo is also no slouch when it comes to Class 5s and he has two runners, GERMAN ROULETTE, whose form is woeful but now finds himself in Class 5, his only decent run in Singapore was over this trip back in April where he led and was beaten only two lengths in a Class 4. The in-form Stephen Baster takes the ride and if there is market support he could be one to watch. The stablemate GYPSY MAGIC is also a class dropper and he won over 1200m on the Poly back in May. Those of the trainers only have single entries, HIS MY IDOL may well be suited by the likely high speed of this event, and he generally runs on well. OH YES OH NOE won well first up last start at long odds and could repeat, and QUI EST LA is dropping back to his winning grade, though he may like it a little longer."

RACE 2: RESTRICTED MAIDEN (2&3YO) (WFA) (2) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "A bunch of relatively lightly raced three year-olds take each other on over 1200m on the Polytrack. RED RIVER ROCK is a Pat Shaw-trained galloper and he has put in sound performances at all five starts; the winkers go on and Saimee Jumaat who has been getting a few rides from Pat lately will be keen to knock in a winner for such a strong stable. MISSION EMPIRE is one of Leticia Dragon’s and she has turned to Joao Moreira for inspiration. The horse found the Magic Millions too hot last start but his previous effort where he raced well at long odds when ridden by the apprentice S Alif, would indicate a strong chance in this field. MACHFIVE ran an even race at his first start and Stephen Baster retains the mount for Michael Freedman – improvement can be expected. PERFECT LOVE was not that far away at its initial outing behind SUPER JUNIOR; with Ivaldo Santana taking the mount he can be expected to make a bid from the number one alley. INVINCIBLE DRAGON ran a nice race at his inaugural attempt over 1400m, he is back in trip here but could be one to consider."

RACE 3: CLASS 4 - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "The usual open Class 4 offers up a race with a host of chances where early track position will play a major part. TEXAN TAKEOVER was a late veterinary scratching last start after showing sound trial form. Owned by Mummify stable and from the Michael Freedman stable to be ridden by Joao Moreira, the two time winner from five Australian starts looks certain to run a bold first-up race. His racing pattern in Australia was to lead and the challenge will be to get him across and settled. Brian Dean has the extremely consistent PERWIRA - a horse who has not finished further back than fourth in his last six starts - all in similar affairs to this. KINGTRAP is a tough old veteran who won over this journey three starts back; with Barend Vorster to ride he can be expected to be thereabouts again. The winkers have been upgraded to blinkers on BABY FACE who has been competitive without winning since annexing his maiden in March; from the ace draw with regular rider Anandan on top he should be right in the mix. ALPHA DYNAMIC put in a good performance at his first start for Theo Keiser, he is well drawn again and Alan Munro takes over from KB Soo – he should be on the pace all the way. DOUBLE S ran a great race over 1200m last start and back to a more suitable 1100m with Greg Cheyne retaining the mount, he should run on strongly for the in-form Sam Chua stable. FAT KING likes it longer but is down in Class and could make his presence felt particularly if there is heaps of early speed, a similar comment could be made for the other Brian Dean runner PHANTOM KNIGHT."

RACE 4: RESTRICTED MAIDEN (2&3YO) (WFA) (1) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "A Restricted Maiden where the revealed form does not set the pulse racing. The most interesting runner is the Pat Shaw trained, Fred Crabbia owned COURT MAGICIAN who is a half brother to a handy West Australian mare called Magic Eight and is by Viscount sire of ROCKET MAN. Having won a trial and to be ridden by Saimee Jumaat, he could be the one to watch. The blinkers and Joao Moreira go on the Brian Dean runner TOMORROWS DREAM, a clear indication that he is expected to run up to his good recent form. OASIS SPUR has also put in two good recent efforts on the Polytrack and from his good alley should be expected to run well. MR KNOW IT ALL ran a good even race last start and Alan Munro can be expected to give him a good ride. This is a race where a number of those which have only had one or two starts could show sharp improvement and horses such as CHINA ROULETTE, THEOLOGY and PURE GOLD fall into that category."

RACE 5: KRANJI STAKES C (SW) (1) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "An open Kranji Stakes C over 1200m sees the return of Tengku Rehaizat on CASH DOT COM for his master Desmond Koh, and no doubt he will be looking to return on a winning note via this very consistent galloper. The HUSSONET 5YO has won twice and not missed a place at his past five starts - all on the Polytrack at this distance - and with the claim his weight drops to 56.5kg and this has him well in at the conditions. Trying to spoil the party will be Joao Moreira who takes over from Jacky Low on SELIGI whose two runs since resuming from a lay-off have been excellent. But a horse that could upset them both is GETREEL. The enigmatic galloper has shown more than enough at his last couple - with a query over the ride at his last start - and a win here would not surprise. KINGRACER was heavily supported on debut and could only manage second, Alan Munro takes over from the suspended John Powell, and the former Argentinean galloper could be better suited by the Polytrack. JET ACE is a nice type working his way through the classes and Barend Vorster should have him on the speed most of the way. YOYO is a speedy customer who can be hard to catch, and that may indeed be the case from the ace draw. BENJI’S EMPIRE is a solid performer and whilst this race does not look ideal for he show up without surprising."

RACE 6: CLASS 5 (2) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A division two Class 5 affair is tough at the best of times but when two of our top three picks have struggled to get within six or so lengths of the winner of late, we are clutching at straws. To make matter worse our on-top selection, SKY STORM, could start close to even money and it might be a look-on race for punters. But you could make excuses for a disappointing run with support for SKY STORM last start when blinkers went back on and certainly worth another look first up after a spell. Likewise HAPPY ENDING has no form but could appreciate a nice gate and the experienced Greg Cheyne. But the 7YO is running out of chances and while more than capable on his day, he certainly is a risk. Splitting the two is the 9YO mare, BLUEBERRY POWER, who at least brings some form into this race courtesy of a close-up finish doing it tough at her last start. She certainly goes close on a repeat of that effort and MIDLIFE CRISIS had nice form prior to his disappointing effort last time out bit worth another look in this weak field. Ugly race so play with care."

RACE 7: CAUSEWAY CLASSIC STAKES OPEN (3YO'S & ABOVE) (SW) (RIDER ALLOWANCES NOT PERMITTED) - 1800M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$150000

Larry says, "A very solid field assembled for this 'Mini-feature' and plenty of chances with value to be found on a few genuine hopes. In saying that, DUJARDIN looks hardest to beat but with Joao Moreira on top and good form to his name, he will be short. But with two nice Polytrack wins prior to his solid showing in the Derby, DUJARDIN looks perfectly placed with 52.5kg and can win. FREEZEMASTER is a horse to follow though and is likely to come under plenty of punter attention. There was enough to like about his tough run in good company last time out to think he can show his best here for the in-form Stephen Baster and a big run would not surprise. We should be getting value for some of the others and a long look on the day for the likes of SUPER GURU, MAURICE UTRILLO, LIGHTNING THIEF, and STEADFAST WARRIOR is warranted with the former Malaysian galloper, SAKIMA, the improver at long-odds."

He has drawn wide but Joao Moreira enjoys this type of race and he should get every possible chance and a strong winning hope. REAL GOODMAN looks a major threat after showing last start over 1600m that he can break his maiden status sooner than later in this grade. He may be value as well and pay to follow. A few others are in this race with winning hopes with SHOPPING LIST getting close and INCREDIBLE HULK due and only needs a race to suit his barn-storming style to win. Disappointing last start and drawn badly here but previous form sound and can include in exotics.
11 97556 Drumsara     I Santana S Gray 1 34 53.5 20
Poly run three back OK and appreciates gate one - keep safe.
12 67594 Santisima Trinidad     S Anandan-1 D Hill 7 32 52.5 33
Not the worst but probably needs to find a yard or two before we seriously consider.
13 97732 Take The Fifth E1   Unfixed Hk Tan 9 31 52.0 10
Recent form good and has to be included somewhere if he gets a start.
14 453*4 Oil Baron E2   Unfixed S Chua 13 30 51.5 20
Drawn wide but recent form solid.

RACE 9: NOVICE (SW) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:25 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "This is a terrific race and with all due respect to a few solid older horses, this race belongs to the 3YO's and a clean-sweep by the youngsters is on the cards. Apart from being very well placed at the race conditions, the likes of PITSTOP, SUPER KENNY and SUPER JUNIOR look like horses that will go through the grades and will all get support in this Novice event. Of the three mentioned, SUPER KENNY looked the most impressive winning by over 9 lengths on debut before leading them up in the Juvenile Championship a week later. That run was good considering the quality field he had chasing him on the back-up and a big win here would not surprise. But PITSTOP would have lost few friends in that same race and can also bounce back in what is a suitable affair today. The Golden Horseshoe winner has drawn awkwardly in 8 but Stephen Baster should ride a very patient race on what is a very promising horse and a win would not surprise. SUPER JUNIOR probably didn't win as convincingly as a 1-20 favourite should but win he did and pay to keep safe with HOT GOLD the other to watch first up after a short spell. Great race and the winner will earn his keep. "

1 22178 Golden Dominator     Hk Cheng-2 M Clements 11 54 58.0 50
Back in trip a concern and giving weight to some smart 3YOs so will find this tough.
2 7**08 Boss Can I Can     D Chee L Khoo 10 47 58.0 100
Struggling.
3 *5980 Marathon Lad     App T Rehaizat-3 D Koh 5 47 58.0 50
OK on his day and claim certainly helps at the conditions.
4 *5054 The Cardinal     V Sivan J O'hara 9 45 58.0 100
Form OK but not in well at the weights and blinkers off so wait for Class 5.
5 42212 Hot Gold     D Beasley C Brown 6 55 55.5 6.00
Smart type resuming and in well enough as a Northern Hemisphere 3YO at the conditions to consider.
6 79743 Dragon     R Lim M Yusof 4 47 55.0 50
Form OK but back in trip and just fair at the weights.
7 *2773 Starlite Shower     App Th Koh-2 S Chua 3 44 55.0 100
Solid but not in well at the conditions and reassess Class 5.
8 2154 Pitstop     S Baster S Burridge 8 60 51.0 3.50
Excuses not to finish closer in the Juvenile Championship and best in at the weights in this - can win.
9 15 Super Kenny     B Vorster P Shaw 2 55 51.0 3.00
Led them up in the Juvenile Championship as favourite and certainly not disgraced to be overhauled late - can make amends in this.
10 10 Flag Of Command     I Santana Zl Mok 7 54 51.0 33
Compounded in the Juvenile but did it tough on pace and happy to think he shows more here.
11 1 Super Junior     J Moreira M Freedman 1 54 51.0 2.60
Won at the shortest quote possible last start and while the win wasnt as commanding as it should have been for the price, he is a horse to follow.

RACE 10: KRANJI STAKES C (SW) (2) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:55 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "EMERALD HILL has won three from three in Singapore - all on the Poly and all as odds-on fave - and no reason to think that trend doesn't continue. This Kranji Stakes C field is solid but EMERALD HILL has been too impressive not to think the US-bred 4YO starts odds-on again and just wins! BRING MORE MONEY has the unfashionable Danny Chee on-board but his Poly form is good and after having excuses last start not to finish closer, he is worth a look at value. Likewise TROPICAL FORREST goes well on the Polytrack and showed last start he is ready to win a race like this. He did it tough wide on that day and has a 3kg claim so a big run would not surprise. Most others have to improve on recent runs or in the case of BENJI'S RULE, step up after good Class 4 wins, but RUSH has a bit of class about him and worth starting to follow."

1 111* Emerald Hill     I Saifudin J O'hara 5 76 59.5 1.80
Won well with heavy support at three starts in Singapore and can continue on his merry way today.
2 28680 Davide     App R Zawari-3 P Shaw 4 71 58.0 20
Form starting to read badly but switch back to Poly with blinkers and claim could see an improvement.
3 27908 Collect The Cash     E Aslam-1 B Dean 1 69 56.5 33
Obviously recent poor form a concern but should be doing better this type of race.
4 21416 Ready To Strike     G Cheyne L Laxon 6 67 56.5 33
Appreciates first run back from a long spell but might need longer to show his best.
5 *19*6 Bring More Money     D Chee L Khoo 7 66 56.5 12
Last start better than the result and recent trial looked good - keep safe.
6 58995 Rush     S Baster M Freedman 11 65 56.5 20
Improved at second run back from a spell and should be ready to show his best.
7 70063 Tropical Forest     App T Rehaizat-3 Zl Mok 8 64 55.0 8.00
Did it tough last start so good effort to place and worth following with 3kg claim a bonus.
8 71631 Benji's Rule     J Moreira S Gray 12 63 55.0 5.00
Won two of his last four and have to respect although wide gate could be an issue.
9 21804 Dynamic Dan     M Kellady-1 S Burridge 9 60 55.0 20
In solid form and always worth an each-way look his type of race.
10 67120 Bukit Rose Wood     App R Shafiq-2 Hw Tan 2 54 52.0 33
Resuming and might just need to outing and perhaps better suited longer.
11 *0780 Big Fortune     App Jl Li-3 Hk Tan 3 53 52.0 100
Needs it easier.
12 26803 Super Jetset     I Santana S Chua 10 44 50.5 12
Showed last start why he has to be respected and can place here with just 50.5kg.
