PREVIEW SINGAPORE FRIDAY 21 March 2014

I think it’s safe to say that Friday nights card in Singapore won’t have patrons banging down the gates but a couple of nice punting races and some nice horses resuming make it more than worthwhile.

One event that ticks both those boxes is the Kranji Stakes C Poly sprint over 1000m (race 7) which not only looks a good race on paper but sees the return of the promising STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT.

The 3YO by Pins hasn’t raced since winning easily in November last year but given what he has shown at the track so far - two wins and two places from five starts - and a nice recent trial, he should win in this company for the Laxon/Brown combination.

However, he will need to be as good as we think he is as he faces two very handy poly sprinters in HARD STUFF resuming and HONEST TRUTH.

Both horses have won five times on the Poly over sprint distances and given they have speed and are both drawn inside STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT, the race is anything but a done deal.

Elsewhere on the card, the Laxon/Brown combination also look to have a very good winning chance with VICTORY ACHIEVER in race 5 on the card.

The 3YO by Volksraad was only fair placing with heavy support on debut but more than repaid the faith shown by punters when winning comfortably at his second start.

Connections looked to have found a very winnable race although BLUE SWEDE - first-up after winning at his third start - looks to have a bright future and while he should be better over longer, will be motoring late.

Best Bets; (VICTORY ACHIEVER race 5, win), (STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT race 7, win) and (BRILLIANT POWER race 1, each-way).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (2, 4, 5 and 7), race 7 (1, 3 and 5), race 8 (Field), race 9 (1, 2, 3, 6 and 8).

RACE 1: CLASS 5 (1) - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A bottom of the barrel Class 5 over 1700m starts the all polytrack programme. Stephen Gray has a pair of chances in DISCO and ROCKY GARDEN. DISCO battled away behind MY DANCING DUEL over 1800m last start, he visits Class 5 and the poly for the first time with Lisa Allpress staying on; his only win was over a mile at Otaki and this race could suit - watch for support. We know a lot more about the stablemate ROCKY GARDEN. Unreliability is his middle name but he gets a claim for Noh Senari and has a nice alley; he would prefer 1800m or longer but could give a sight. BRILLIANT POWER is a Singapore maiden but has a win over a mile at Hastings to his credit; he ran 2nd to BOWIE KNIFE in a Class 4 three starts back; if he can repeat that is good enough for this. MORE THAN WORTHY is a maiden but he gets Manoel Nunes and should be battling away late. SUPER STAR's form reads badly but he can set a speed and has won at the trip leading all the way."

RACE 2: INITIATION (4-YO) (HORSES THAT HAVE NOT WON A RACE IN 2 YEARS PRIOR TO NOMINATION DATE & HAVE < 9 STARTS IN SIN/M'SIA) (WEIGHT FOR AGE) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "An Initiation over 1100m and SMART CHIEF is the one with the form on the board. The 4YO has been runner-up at his past two starts to APPRECIATION and TURANGAWAEWAE, so the blinkers go on and despite the awkward draw, Corey Brown should give him every chance. DRAGON WALK has got plenty of speed and Dan Beasley should have him near the lead for a long way. POWER LIN has ability but is his own worst enemy, being very green and refusing to go straight. ENGLISH DREAM and AUREUS have also put in good performances and could make their presence felt. The un-raced have not shown a lot at the trials but as always, a market watch is in order."

RACE 3: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (2) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A KSD over 1100m and PRIMITIVE INSTINCT is resuming. He races well fresh and his most recent trial was outstanding; with John Powell up for Leticia Dragon he will be the one to beat. SUPER JETSET has been runner-up at his past two starts in this grade and at this distance. In a race with little depth he should be on the speed all the way and could be hard to pass. PEGASUS VICTORY is better over 1000m and prefers Class 5 but this race is not strong and he could give a bold sight from his good draw. SOUTHERN GENERAL has been racing poorly but if he can repeat his maiden win over this distance will be hard to beat. JONATHAN is not the strongest but has speed and MIGHTY CREATION could be closing late. The improver, however, could be FLAMING FIREHEART with blinkers added first-time. His race form is poor but his recent good trial with head-gear has him under notice."

RACE 4: CLASS 5 (CLAIMING RIDERS ONLY) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "A very ordinary Class 5 for the Claiming riders over 1200m where a lot of the better chances struggle at the distance. REGAL SALUTE is a 17 start maiden who has been close up at his past four starts over 1200m; with Noh Senari and a nice draw he should go very close. HEARTS has been trying for a long time, he has been placed eight times from 14 starts on the poly and has to be considered on his recent 2nd placing over 1100m though he has only been placed once over 1200m. ZAC COMMAND doesn't win often but can run out a strong 1200m and has a good alley, he was placed this trip and Class three starts back and Harry Kasim should give him every chance. SARONG is a speedy mare who is suited this grade; 1200m can test but she will give them something to catch. ALWAYS A WINNER won over 1100m two starts back, 1200m can be too far but he has pace and with Willie Tan up should be on the speed all the way. OUR RIVER DANCER and AFROJACK could surprise."

RACE 5: NOVICE (SET WEIGHTS) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$65000

Larry says, "An interesting Novice over 1200m. VICTORY ACHIEVER is coming off a good Maiden win over the distance, from the ace with Corey Brown up he should be the hardest to beat. The blinkers come off LET'S TALK NOW he has been racing well on turf over longer journeys but has not missed a place in four poly starts including a win over 1200m - he could be the knockout hope for the Munro-Takaoka combination. BLUE SWEDE is a promising horse resuming; he overcame difficulties to win well in Maiden company last start, he has had two quiet trials and with John Powell to steer from a good gate a market watch is in order; if right he will be the one powering home late. ALL MY WAY has placed at his last two outings in Class 4 and KSD over 1200m, he will put in an honest effort. The newcomer, HAKAMGONG, is a maiden but has been trialing well."

RACE 6: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (1) - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "INTENTION was very disappointing last start but he never really settled in running and his race looked over 600m from home. He battled on OK to the wire and given winkers are off for this assignment, he can show his best which must go close to see him breaking his maiden status. The two horses he has to beat - PROBO CHANDROSO and ROBERT E - have a lot more race experience in their favour and both looked well placed to win again. PROBO CHANDROSO very much appreciates a better gate today and he can certainly turn some good form into a win with Danny Beasley on-top. The connections have stuck with the 4kg claim and R Hasri on ROBERT E and his early speed has him in the firing line for a very long time. For value, throw CAUTION into top four selections as he could give them a scare at odds with HERO SUCCESS the other who could figure prominently. VISIONARY the long-shot hope but like to see him in easier company."

RACE 7: KRANJI STAKES C (SET WEIGHTS) - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000

Larry says, "As his name suggests, STRAIGHTTOTHEPOINT's form does just that. After butchering his chances at his race debut, the 3YO by Pins has won two and placed second twice from his next four starts. The fact he is definitely improving with racing - he was terribly green at his first few starts - all bodes well to him going through the grades and given a nice recent trial after a short spell, he should win. But a couple of handy Poly sprinters in HONEST TRUTH and HARD STUFF will test him. HONEST TRUTH comes into this fresh after a very good Class 4 win and a big run here would not surprise. HARD STUFF is another resuming but has first-up form and must be a big show in what is a suitable trip. Of the others, LAMBORGHINI - also resuming - is capable of a very cheeky race and RISING EMPIRE could be ready to show his best back in Singapore."

RACE 8: CLASS 5 (2) - 1700M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000

Larry says, "This looks a shocking race for punters with most horses the types that disappoint more often than not. So much so that a couple of long term maidens in ATIAMURI and SUPER VELOX have to be considered some hope in a race with no depth. Of the two, ATIAMURI - an 18 start maiden - looks the pick given he appreciates what was an OK first-up run and should improve although he is a query on this surface. But the horse to beat on paper - and perhaps the only one to be confident about - is DOS EQUIS. The one-time winner was backed and only found the enigmatic HEAR ME in front of him last start and given that race looked stronger than this, he should go mighty close. Of the rest, CONQUEST was disappointing last start but given he leads and often goes OK - he has won four times - he could be hard to pass."

RACE 9: CLASS 4 - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$55000

Larry says, "A couple of Class droppers look serious hopes in the lucky last with EATONS GOLD and MEDIA CAPTAIN both very much appreciating Class 4 company. EATONS GOLD signaled he is ready to win again with a very nice effort in Class 3 last start and with Nunes retaining the ride, he might be hard to hold out late. But MEDIA CAPTAIN does little wrong in this company and as his last start was better than it looks, he also looks a big show. R Rueven's 3kg claim looks a good move and expect support for both the Class droppers. The newcomer, SCRAPPER WELL, also has a claim - 1kg for Harry Kassim - and given horses that have arrived via Hong Kong of late for the same owner have raced well, he must be considered. He has trialed like he will go well at his Singapore debut although gate 11 is a worry. While going wide in exotics, the honest TAKE IT HOME looks the only other winning hope after a big victory in KSD company."
