DE KOCK HOLDS THE ACES IN NURSERY EVENTS

The 2-year-olds get a chance to share centre stage at Saturday's big meeting at Turffontein with the running of the Gr 1 SA Nursery and Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery, both to be run over 1160m. Trainer Mike de Kock holds a dominant hand in these events with his rising stars Banaadeer and Majmu respectively.

Australian-bred Banaadeer gave notice of his ability on debut when winning by over eight lengths and followed up with another effortless victory in the Storm Bird Stakes. He's been unextended to date and looks headed for the big time. He looks very hard to oppose here.

The one who could get closest to Banaadeer is Lock Him Up, who posted an easy win on debut and looks the sort who can build on that run.

Isphan caused an upset when flying up late to win the Protea Stakes over 1100m. Interestingly, he reversed the form with runner-up Kiss Me Hardy, who had beaten him by some eight lengths when the pair met on debut, showing just how drastically these youngsters can improve. If he reproduces the turn of foot and resolve he showed in that race, he'll be competitive here.

Kiss Me Hardy won on debut before chasing home Banaadeer and Isphan in their respective feature races victories alluded to above. He hasn't done much wrong and should pick up a cheque here.

Rough Justice was surprisingly beaten by filly Green Crest last time out, having earlier finished fourth in the Protea Stakes. He's shown enough to suggest he can run into the placings here.

Interestingly, two fillies have opted to take on the colts here, rather than the thankless task of trying to oppose Majmu in the Fillies Nursery. Flame Cat was a gallant second to Majmu in the Ruffian Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes and looked set to get back on the winning trail in a Juvenile Plate thereafter, only to be upstaged by Carry On Alice who had herself run third to Majmu in the Pretty Polly Stakes. They receive a 2.5kg sex allowance and either of them could place here.

Moving on to the Fillies Nursery, Majmu, also bred down under, is still learning her trade and her inexperience has already cost her a good few lengths in both her starts to date. Despite this, she has won easily on each occasion and she will become even more formidable with each run as she gains in experience. She made her debut against winners in the Ruffian Stakes over 1000m and duly eased home despite being slowly away and running around a bit. It was a similar story in the Pretty Polly Stakes over 1100m, where she won even more easily. Unless there's an unexposed lurker in the rest of the field, it's hard to see how she can be opposed and she should notch up another comfortable victory en route to even bigger things.

The race for second should be disputed between Green Crest, who posted a comfortable victory against male opposition last time out, One Fine Day, an easy winner second time out, and Rio Filo, an impressive debut winner.

De Kock also holds a strong hand in the Gr 2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes over 2000m, with Espumanti, and the Gr 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160, where Welwitschia looks the pick of his three-pronged attack. However, these races will be more competitive and while they are taken to win, selection is less clear-cut in their events and they will not find it as easy as their juvenile counterparts.

Espumanti has respectable Gr 1 form to her name, having placed behind champion Beach Beauty in both the Garden Province and Majorca Stakes and, most recently, finished third to the smart Along Came Polly in the Empress Club Stakes. That's good enough form to win here, but both Orator's Daughter and Cherry On The Top could provide stiff opposition.

Orator's Daughter has won many fans with her two extremely gutsy victories in the Acacia Handicap and Jacaranda Handicap, the latter when conceding weight down the field.

Both Espumanti and Orator's Daughter face stamina doubts on paper, having not raced beyond 1800m, but it's a small field of seven and they're unlikely to go at breakneck speed. If anything, one can expect a bit of a canter and sprint, in which case a repeat of Espumanti's Empress Club effort at this track should be good enough to see her home. Having said that, Anton Marcus is the master of dictating terms up front and, in this small field, he could do just that with Orator's Daughter.

Cherry On The Top, meanwhile, has flown under the radar this season, having run reasonably well in a strong Pinnacle event and the Charity Mile before below-par efforts in the Summer Cup and, most recently, the Empress Club Stakes. She patently needed that last run and will see out the trip easily. If she can recapture the form that saw her win the Triple Tiara last season, she should be the one to beat here, but she does have a few questions to answer at present.

Tip Toe deserves a mention, having only just been touched off by Orator's Daughter in the Jacaranda Handicap. However, she was receiving 8kg that day and it's hard to see her reversing that form at level weights here, even after making allowances for her downfield Empress Club effort, where she choked up in running.

The Camellia Stakes, meanwhile, looks a typically open affair and these sprint features for fillies have become notorious for throwing up some strange results. Welwitschia is by far the best-weighted runner in the field and, having posted a runaway victory in this event two years ago, has since spent her time campaigning mainly against male opposition, with some very respectable results to show for it. She's placed in Gr 1 events such as the Computaform Sprint and Mercury Sprint and won the Gr 2 Diadem Stakes in open company four runs back. Needless to say, if she repeats that sort of form here, she is weighted to win comfortably. However, she hasn't shown her usual sparkle since her Diadem win and her supporters will be banking on her returning to her best and using her turn of foot to good effect here.

If Welwitschia fluffs her lines, then there are chances aplenty for top honours. Her own stablemates Honorine and Tayba have shown the type of ability required to win a race of this nature, although the former is inconsistent and the latter returns from a seven-month break. Kinematic Countess and Mary Stuart, who filled the first two places in the recent Sycamore Sprint over this course and distance, must be in with a chance. Mary Stuart is one of a quartet sent out by Sean Tarry and her stablemates She's A Stunner, Extra Zero and Dolomiti all have claims at best, although the latter two are not that consistent. She's A Stunner, in particular, will enjoy the compressed weight terms here, having usually had to concede chunks of weight when racing against her own sex. She warrants serious consideration.

Tiger Quest has disappointed at her last two starts but can also make a splash at her best.
