Heavy Treatment for Greyville Grass Track

The Greyville turf track is currently undergoing heavy spring treatment, while Scottsville will be beginning its spring treatment on September 15, the day after a scheduled racemeeting, mentioned Gold Circle on their website.

Both tracks are benefitting from the current warm spell which promotes grass growth and they will benefit further from the seasonal rains which will hopefully be on their way soon.

Greyville’s turf track has undergone heavy scarification and has been top dressed with a silica sand that has been sterilised through a heating process in order to get rid of foreign matter such as grass seeds.

The track will then be verti-drained which sends the sand down to the roots, thereby helping drainage and promoting growth. An over seed will then be put in and then 500,000 kukuya plugs will be planted.

Sods of kukuya will be laid around the finish line area, which is effected by the shade from the grandstand. A sod resembles a carpet, as opposed to a plug. The course will then be watered and fertilised, but will also need plenty of rain.

Scottsville’s spring treatment will be taking place at the right time of the year due to the warmer temperatures and the expected rain.

The Greyville turf track is due to be up and running again in mid-October, while Scottsville will be out of action for about eight weeks from September 15.
