Joao didn’t win them all last weekend but his haul of seven wins and six placings from 20 rides is enough to think we can follow the Brazilian champ with confidence into Friday.
True, his book doesn’t look as strong as it did last week but with Sureesh Juglall not riding on Friday, Moreira hooks up with trainer Pat Shaw on four occasions and the combination looks set for a big night.
After what looks just a sighter on NORTHERN CAT in the first for Steven Lam, Moreira rides the in-form ROCK OF AGES for Shaw in the Restricted Maiden (race 2) and he looks very hard to beat.
Last start winner, AFTERNOON DELIGHT, backs up for Joao in race 3 but it is BARNATO in the fourth that could be one of the better bets of the night.
The 3YO looked a good thing beaten when resuming is Class 4 company at his last start and will be very hard to beat at the Novice race conditions.
The Moreira/Shaw combination will be hoping for a race-to-race double with SUGAR MAN in race 5 and SPYDER will be heavily fancied in the lucky last to make it back-to-back wins.
Elsewhere, Moreira rides PEACE NO WAR for Michael Freedman in race 6 on the eight race card and BRAD for long-time supporter, Laurie Laxon, in race 8.
But with Joao’s horses always supported, there will be value on offer and it will pay to keep the likes of SIMPANG (race 1), EXQUISITELY SWEET (race 3), FAALTLESS (race 6), anything in race 7 and SELEGI in the last very safe in exotics or back each-way.
Best Bets; (BARNATO race 4, win), (SIMPANG race 1, value) and (SELEGI race 8, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (2, 3, 4 and 7), race 6 (5, 6 and 7), race 7 (2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 11), race 8 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6).

RACE 1: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (2) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 18:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$38000
Larry says, "An open KSD over 1200m kicks off the all polytrack programme where the interesting runner may be LITTLE JUMBO, a 4YO mare and sister to the useful West Australian sprinter BUSTER’S EMPIRE. She was racing well in Malaysia beating CONFIERO in her maiden win, her trials have been good and with a claim for Noh Senari and the ace, she should be prominent all the way. SIMPANG was well beaten but ran on stoutly in this company last start and should closing late once again. In fact his form is better than it looks and he might be value which would handy in this open field. The veteran, THAT’STHEONE’s last win was on turf over 1200m in this company but he is quite competent on the poly and with Zawari’s claim should be handy all the way. Joao Moreira has taken on the challenge of NORTHERN CAT for Steven Lam who is having his fourth run since moving from ZL Mok; his last effort was sound when fourth with TR Barnabas up and he has won at the trip in Class 5. There will be no shortage of speed in this with both GOOD SCORE and MACHFIVE having plenty of toe; both will give a sight but can be found out late. NINETYSIX CHAMP is also likely to go forward and he fought on well when resuming last outing. LIVE WELL broke through last start over 1200m on turf in a weak maiden, his poly form is only fair but he could show up in this with no weight."

RACE 2: RESTRICTED MAIDEN (2&3YO) (WEIGHT FOR AGE) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000
Larry says, "A Restricted Maiden over 1200m and whilst several of those we have seen have put in respectable efforts, none look significantly above average. ROCK OF AGES has tried hard and been placed at his past two outings over 1100m. He gets Moreira, trialed well recently, should race handy and be hard to hold out. SUPER JOY put in a solid effort to just miss over 1200m on turf last outing; a Northern Hemisphere American-bred he should handle the poly and race well again. Theo Keiser does a good job with his small string and has two runners in this. SUNDAY SUN showed pace and boxed on well on debut, he is a nice type by Turffontein who will get every chance from the ace. His other runner is a 2YO filly BM POWER who is a half-sister to WINFREY who goes around in the same race. Any of the others could get in the exotics."

RACE 3: KRANJI STAKES D (SET WEIGHTS) (1) - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 19:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$38000
Larry says, "A KSD over 1200m full of chances but many are unreliable and hard to predict. LION MASTER went out hard and led before being run down by SCRAT over 1000m last start. The 4YO won his Maiden over 1200m at previous outing and should be on the speed all the way. AFTERNOON DELIGHT is a mare in form, she won last week with Moreira up and gets the chance to repeat the dose. Most of the others are highly unreliable but EXQUISITELY SWEET was supported last start and while he can get a long way out of his ground, he is down in grade and if in range of them on straightening, could finish over the top. GENOVA AT WORK is more comfortable in Class 5 but should get a gun run from the ace, WORK AHEAD has many issues but on his day is well up to this level , GOOD LOOUKEN back to a suitable distance on the poly, LUCKY COME and GOLDEN KNIGHT fresh could all figure."

RACE 4: NOVICE (SET WEIGHTS) - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$75000
Larry says, "A Novice over 1000m with some speedy young ones involved. BARNATO resumed in a Class 4 over 1000m and was caught late. He gets Moreira, should be better for the run and with only 51kg, should be hard to hold out. MEXICAN GAL failed last start in the Juvenile Championship but showed plenty of toe winning on debut; she too will be up the front for a long way. LADY ROULETTE is also a flying machine and could well be the bunny and give them something to catch. Throw in MASTERMIND and it is clear there will be pace all the way. That could suit LUCKY GIANT and SEASWALLOW both winners at 1200m who will be able to sit off the pace and finish off strongly. But the 3YO's in best at the conditions and happy to follow the light-weights."

RACE 5: CLASS 5 - 1000M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 20:50 PRIZE MONEY: S$35000
Larry says, "A very ordinary Class 5 over 1000m and SUGAR MAN may get his chance. The 4Y0 has been close up at past three outings at KSD level and his only win was over this trip; with Joao Moreira to ride he should be prominent all the way. RORY has speed and is a three-time winner at this trip; with Oscar Chavez up he should get a good run from the inside gate. ZAC GALLANT is a maiden who has placed at his past three outings, the tongue tie goes on and despite the bad gate if he can get across he should give a sight. Most of the others are either unreliable or have little ability or both. TIME AFTER TIME is a seven start maiden who has changed stables, he did show some ability in earlier runs and could show up fresh. BROWNE’S ANATOMY surprised at long odds last start and has also changed stables; this may be too short but he could be closing late. His stablemate VIRGIN GALACTIC also won at long odds last outing, he goes up 4kg but this is no harder and if he can repeat the effort must be a strong chance."

RACE 6: CLASS 2 - 1100M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 21:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$100000
Larry says, "This race is an absolute cracker with three or even four top Poly sprinters doing battle. The three that stand-out and are sure to get support are in alphabetical order, FAALTLESS, PEACE NO WAR and SAND LANE and coincidentally, that order is hopefully how they finish. FAALTLESS is resuming and in this field he might even provide value first-up. The 4YO - who pushed WAR AFFAIR in the 3YO sprint - has an exceptional Poly sprint record winning three out of four starts on the surface but ironically it was his second behind the very smart EMPEROR MAX that has him a horse to follow. His recent trial was good and from gate three, he gets his chance. PEACE NO WAR will be hard to beat though. The 4YO has shown plenty of ability from his juvenile days and picks himself after winning last start in good Poly company as the odds-on elect. SAND LANE is gunning for three straight and has to be respected with GOLDEN SAND STEED always a show with value the key given the support likely for the three top picks."

Case in point is ULTIMATE WARRIOR who was ridden upside-down two starts back in a similar affair when he had some support and was a popular picks by pundits to show his best. But he failed miserably - perhaps not all his fault - and while hard to have on exposed form, he could win without surprising. Likewise, HEAR ME has three ducks eggs in his recent form but finds himself in what is a suitable grade and trip. FLYING MISSION also looks in poor form but is recent run was better than it looked and he could show up at odds back on his winning surface. Those in form and pick themselves are FEI YUI who won very well last start and CALLIDE RIVER who also comes into this with winning form."

Form reads terrible but had excuses of late and drop in grade so could run a cheeky race at odds. |

Ignore last start on the turf as previous Poly form exceptional - albeit in Class 5. |
RACE 8: CLASS 4 - 1200M (POLYTRACK) TIME: 22:20 PRIZE MONEY: S$60000
Larry says, "Taking a risk in the last in leaving out the three last start winners - especially SPYDER - but it does look a tricky race with value to be found in some of the usual Poly suspects in SELEGI, ROYAL STYLE and FAITHFULLY. Of the three, SELEGI finds himself in Class 4 after showing enough in Class 3 to follow. He doesn't win out of turn but looks well-placed with a 2kg claim and should get every chance for Zuriman from gate 3. ROYAL STYLE looks due and although beaten over four lengths into second last start, he goes close with Oscar Chavez on-board and FAITHFULLY was never involved at his most recent outing and should be the value runner in what is a suitable race. Obviously SPYDER is the one punters will follow with Moreira jumping on after winning last start but he will be super short and his win was in atrocious conditions so he could be a risk."
