BRITISH Champions Sprint: Byron wins again

Gordon Lord Byron came through the eye of a needle in the dying strides to snatch victory in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot.

Tom Hogan's admirable globetrotter looked to have plenty to do a furlong out, but Wayne Lordan managed to weave his way between Tropics and Jack Dexter to land the spoils on the well-backed 5-1 joint-favourite.

Tropics was second for the Dean Ivory team, beaten a length and a quarter, with Jack Dexter another neck away in third and Maarek running a fine race in fourth.

Lordan said: "It was a bit tight, but he accelerated through. When he got to the front he actually slowed down a bit."

Hogan added: "I was very worried for a long time but, tactically, he got out of trouble. He's a super horse, it's a pleasure to train him. We'll probably go to Hong Kong with him now. It's the stuff of dreams to have a horse like him."

The County Tipperary handler felt he had the three-times Group One scorer as well as he had at any stage this season.

He went on: "He had a break in the middle of summer - he injured his back at the Royal meeting. He was much better today than he's ever been. He's been really thriving. We'll continue on travelling. There's plenty of invitations for him."

Hogan would also like to convince American officials to give Gordon Lord Byron an invite to the Breeders' Cup fixture at Santa Anita.

He said: "He's not Breeders' Cup eligible, but I'm sure a deal could be made with the Breeders' Cup committee. I'd be definitely interested."

Ivory was proud of Tropics, who is also likely to be on his travels.

He said: "I'm over the moon with him. It was just a phenomenal performance. If you keep knocking on the door, one day it will open. He could be even better again next year.

"I'd like to go to Hong Kong, but we'll just work our way through the calendar. We'll probably have a word with Tom (Hogan) and follow Gordon Lord Byron around!"

Jim Goldie plans to stay much closer to home with Jack Dexter.

He said: "Gordon Lord Byron must be the toughest horse around. I'm a wee bit disappointed as everything was in our favour, but the first four home were the ones I thought would be. We might go on to the Wentworth at Doncaster again and do the same thing next year."
