ACT OF WAR TOO GOOD IN CAPE GUINEAS

Act Of War (SAF) looked the one to beat in the Gr 1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday and he justified strong betting support to outclass the opposition. Harry's Son (AUS) and Kingvoldt (SAF) were not disgraced in chasing the winner home while Imperial Gold (SAF) ran a blinder to finish fourth.

Light The Lights jumped out in front and showed the way from Brutal Force, Captain Alfredo, Harry's Son and Act Of War. Imperial Gold was next best, racing ahead of Arniston and Zambezi River.

Light The Lights was tackled by Harry's Son and Kingvoldt soon after entering the straight, while Zambezi River, who had been slowly away, started to make up some ground down the inside. All eyes were on Act Of War, however, and although he still had some ground to make up 300m out, it was clear that he was travelling comfortably and ready to impose himself. He moved effortlessly into the lead 150m out and was never under pressure as Bernard Fayd'Herbe pushed him out to win comfortably.

Act Of War completed a feature double on the day for trainer Joey Ramsden (pictured) and owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste, the combination having teamed up earlier in the day to win the Gr 3 Grandwest Cape Summer Stayers Handicap. He has now won six of seven starts, his sole defeat coming on debut, and judging by the way he cleaned up some strong opposition here, there is still a lot more to come from the impressive son of Dynasty.

Neither Harry's Son nor Kingvoldt had any chance with the winner but they both emerged with plenty of credit. Harry's Son had been clocking up air miles between Johannesburg and Durban over the past two months before travelling down for the first season's Gr 1 classic open to colts, while Kingvoldt had to tack across from a very wide draw.

Imperial Gold looked out of his depth on bare form but produced a cracking effort in this class. Trainer Sean Tarry has always rated him and he justified his conditioner's confidence in him here.
