Race-4 (Turf) R 200 000 1100m 14:20 Ref-886 - Grade 3 ENGLEZAKIS PROTEA STAKES for 2 year-olds - REDCARPET CAPTAIN in a classy win
The start was delayed for about two minutes as SLINKY JACK broke through the gates. After having been examined was scratched.
When they did start KINGOFTHEWORLD broke well along with BAAHIR who threw his jockey Anthony Delpech in the parade ring. This could have had an effect on both horse and jockey. KINGOFTHEWORLD showed good pace for half the race but fell away in the latter stages. He was tracked early on by the eventual winner and tote favourite, REDCARPET CAPTAIN. This two year old son of Captain Al, trained by Gavin Van Zyl and ridden by top jockey S'Manga Khumalo, looks set to have a bright future and over further.
At the four hundred metre mark REDCARPET CAPTAIN took over the lead from a fast finishing ARABIAN BEAT who was not disgraced in second. The Cape Town raider, BUCKINGHAMPSHIRE moved up menacingly at the four hundred metre marker and should not be ignored next time out. He is a far better runner than this and could have been outdone by the draw. MOGOK MASTER ran a much improved race in third and found a good finish. The Sean Tarry first timer, ESCAPE ROUTE looks to be a good sort in the making.
The well fancied and highly rated BAAHIR failed to show and is definitely better than this.
