Chautauqua and Mongolian Khan headlined a glorious day for Inglis graduates on Day One of The Championships at Royal Randwick, claiming Australia’s richest sprint and richest Derby respectively.

Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago x Lovely Jubly) today received well-earned Group 1 glory, coming from last to take out the $2,500,000 Group 1 ATC TJ Smith Stakes for Hawkes Racing under the guidance of Tommy Berry. Offered by Berkeley Park Stud at the 2012 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Chautauqua has now won over $2,200,000 in prize money for a large group of owners.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes was incredibly impressed with the ability the four-year-old showed today.

"Honestly he was never in a winning position," said Hawkes.

"To come from last today and do what he did, that was pretty freaky," Hawkes said.

Five of the last six winners of the TJ Smith Stakes to be offered for sale were offered by Inglis including Black Caviar, Master Of Design, Takeover Target & Bentley Biscuit.

Australian-bred three-year-old Mongolian Khan, sold by his breeders as a weanling with Inglis, won the $2,000,000 Group 1 ATC Australian Derby over 2400m.

Bred and by Tasmania’s Grenville Stud, Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor x Centafit) won six from seven starts in New Zealand for Murray Baker, including the Group 1 New Zealand Derby, before returning to Australia for his Autumn Carnival campaign.

The three-year-old colt was sold at the 2011 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale for just $9,000 and today took his earnings to in excess of $1,800,000 for Mr Lin Lang and Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry Ltd.

This is the third Australian Derby win for Baker, who commented “We always like coming here, it’s very good racing and they all get a show on the nice big track,”

“I think he is a pretty handy horse, to win two Derbies is a pretty good effort. He’ll go for a break now and then we’ll set him for a trip to Melbourne,” Baker said.

The first Group 1 of the day was sponsored by Inglis. The ATC Inglis Sires’ was won by the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Pride Of Dubai. Bred by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry x Al Anood) is now also owned by Coolmore Stud, China Horse Club Racing Pty Ltd and Emmaroo Bloodstock. Equal second went to Rageese, also owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, and Inglis Classic graduate Odyssey Moon.

There are 20 yearlings at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale by Pride Of Dubai’s ill-fated sire Street Cry.

The Group 3 ATC Carbine Club Stakes was won by Hi World (High Chaparral x Beauty World). Offered as a weanling from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2012 Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock Sale, the Peter Moody-trained three-year-old colt failed to meet his reserve of $75,000 and has now earned close to $200,000.

The final race at Royal Randwick, the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes was taken out in stellar style by Inglis graduate Candelara, marking the first black type win for the three-year-old. Candelara (Real Saga x Jadana) was a $31,000 purchase from the draft of Carramar Park for her owner Kon Papanicolaou at the 2013 Inglis Classic Yearling sale. Trained by Bjorn Baker, the filly will now contest the Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks this Saturday, on The Championships Day Two.

Selling will begin at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale at 11.00am on all three days, starting tomorrow, Tuesday 7 April, and will run through Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 April at Inglis’ Newmarket Complex in Sydney.
