Aussie racing chief home shot at

Chief racing steward of Racing Victoria Terry Bailey had his front door shot six times only a week after another integrity official reported a "bikie" outside his house. His family were at the back of the house when the incident happened. The shooter fired into the front door with an automated weapon.

Leaders in the racing industry have thrown their support behind chief steward Terry Bailey.

Victorian Racing Minister Martin Pakula, Victoria Racing Club chairman Michael Burn and champion trainer Gai Waterhouse have condemned those responsible for firing shots into Bailey’s home on Sunday evening.

“I’ll simply say this to those involved – if anybody thinks that Terry Bailey or any racing integrity officials will be deterred in any way from providing and ensuring the highest standards of integrity for Victorian racing they have another thing coming,” Minister Pakula said.

“The matter is now in the hands of Victoria Police, there’s been extra security provided for Terry and his family.”

Waterhouse was shocked when she found out about the incident.

“It’s a disgraceful thing and a weak cur of a person whoever did it,” Waterhouse said.

“Terry Bailey is a very good man and he’s doing his job and he should be allowed to get on and do it without being driven mad by some idiot wanting to shoot at his home and shoot at him, it’s terrible.”

Burn says no-one should have to go through anything like that.

“I think Australians of any walk of life would find abhorrent the idea that a hard-working person could be sitting at home on a Sunday evening with his family to have shots ringing through you house,” Burn said.

“I think Australians, generally, would find that an abhorrent thought.

“Terry Bailey is an outstanding, hard-working person, deserves the full support of the industry and I’m sure he’ll get it.

“My thoughts are with Terry and his family.”
