EQUUS AWARD NOMINEES FOR CHAMPION OLDER FILLY/MARE

Three exceptional females have been nominated for the title of South Africa’s Equus Champion Older Filly/Mare for the past racing season.
The trio are top sprinter Carry On Alice (Captain Al), five time Gr1 winner Inara (Trippi) and Gr1 J&B Met winner Smart Call (Ideal World).

Remarkably, both Carry On Alice and Smart Call won Grade One races in open company, while Inara won three Gr1 races (in three different provinces!) during the recently concluded 2015-2016 racing season.

CARRY ON ALICE: Captain Al –Carry On Katie
A Grade One winner at two, three and four, Carry On Alice has ranked among the country’s top sprinters for the past two seasons, and has been among the leaders of her generation for the past three. Narrowly beaten on her 4yo debut, Carry On Alice bounced back to win the Gr2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes. Surprisingly, if unluckily, beaten in her following two outings, Carry On Alice made amends in no uncertain terms when returning to Gauteng. There the daughter of Captain Al cruised to victory in a pinnacle stakes before registering a comprehensive defeat of some of the country’s top sprinters in the Gr1 World Sports Betting Computaform Sprint. Runner up to Carry On Alice in that race was Talktothestars (Overlord), who would go on to land the Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint (under top weight) to frank the form.
INARA: Trippi –Mountains Of Mist
This remarkably game racemare won a trio of Grade One races during the season, and also finished second to Smart Call (beating high class 3yo Bela-Bela) in the Gr1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes. The daughter of Trippi kicked off her 4yo campaign with back to back wins including the G3 Diana Stakes. Following her runner up effort in the Paddock Stakes, Inara made it back to back wins in the Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, when accounting for favourite and multiple Same Jurisdiction. In the process, she helped to provide breeder-owner Drakenstein Stud with a 1-2-3 finish in this prestigious Grade One race. Inara would then travel to Gauteng to collect the Gr1 L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes before ending her campaign with a courageous victory in the Gr1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes on Vodacom Durban July day.

SMART CALL: Ideal World –Good Judgement
Sent overseas, following her brilliant campaign in 2015-2016, the Mauritzfontein Stud bred and owned Smart Call (who also holds an entry in the Gr1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes) is on course for a tilt at the 2016 Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Just once defeated in 2015-2016, Smart Call won her last four on the bounce, with her wins including a comprehensive triumph of the best fillies and mares in South Africa in the Gr1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes.

The brilliant daughter of Ideal World confirmed her class with a sparkling win, on her final local outing, when accounting for subsequent dual Gr1 winner Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) in the Gr1 J&B Met.
