Today we paid homage, to a legend of the South African Turf. The ill fated, In Full Flight, with the Listed R150 000 In Full Flight Handicap at Scottsville over 1100m. He was part of the 1968 foal crop, that produced two other legends, "The Iron Horse" Sentinel, with whom he created many a thrilling finish! Sentinel, was one of the best sprinter milers of his day. His other counterpart a three time winner of the Holiday Inns Handicap (Summer Cup) was the big, bold, chestnut Elevation. The 1968 foal crop, has to go down as one of the best foal crops, in the history of South African racehorse breeding.

In Full Flight, passed the winning post in first place, in some of South Africa's greatest races inculding the 1972 Cape Guineas, Queens Plate and Durban July Handicap, as a three year old. He met his untimely death as a four year, just days after the running of the 1973 Benson and Hedges Metropolitan Handicap. It was discovered that the colt passed on, due to a ruptured lung. In Full Flight has gone down as one of the best racehorses, to ever grace the South African Turf. He won 11 feature races and earned R123,620, the colt may have had a very short career, but his legacy is forever enduring, he may not of been seen as a champion by many before his racing career began, when he was purchased for only R3 500 at the 1970 yearling sales, but what trainer David Payne saw in, In Full Flight, was more than just potential. He was a quality specimen, with raw athleticism, balance and spirit, David Payne saw life in its purest form, in the colt.
