Lloyd Takes on Everest, Jocks finalized

The jockey list for the $10 million The TAB Everest is now complete with champion UK rider Jamie Spencer confirmed for Brave Smash and Tim Clark to ride the filly Tulip. Meanwhile South African Jeff Lloyd takes the ride on Houtzen.

The booking of Spencer adds a European flavour to the Everest as he partners the ex-Japanese sprinter for the Australian Turf Club, trainer Darren Weir and Australian Bloodstock.

Spencer, 37, has been champion jockey in both Ireland and Britain and has more than 2000 flat winners in Britain and more than 20 Group 1 wins to his name.

He’s known to Australian punters through his win in the 2013 Mackinnon Stakes in Melbourne on Side Glance and has also won Group 1 races in Britain, Ireland, the United States, UAE, France and Singapore.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing James Heddo said Spencer’s riding style would suit Brave Smash.

“Brave Smash has a racing pattern that will benefit from an experienced rider and Jamie Spencer fits that criteria perfectly,’’ Heddo said.

“Jamie has ridden for Australian Bloodstock successfully in the past and the ATC is very excited to have Jamie visit Australia again to take part in a race which is attracting huge interest across the world.’’

Earlier on Thursday, Coolmore announced Tim Clark would partner their filly Tulip which is one of three runners for the David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable.

The field, which should become final on Tuesday when acceptances are taken, is:
Chautauqua (Brenton Avdulla)
Fell Swoop (Tye Angland)
Redzel (Kerrin McEvoy)
Deploy (Josh Parr)
Clearly Innocent (Hugh Bowman)
Redkirk Warrior (Regan Bayliss)
Vega Magic (Craig Williams)
Brave Smash (Jamie Spencer)
English (Blake Shinn)
She Will Reign (Corey Brown)
Houtzen (Jeff Lloyd)
